New Badger Council Girl Scout Director Attends Monroe Meeting

Miss Maxine Austin Beloit executive director of the Badger Council of Girl Scouts attended a Monroe meeting in the First National Bank Community Room. She was introduced to local members and accompanied by Miss Joan Wise Beloit district advisor. The meeting featured demonstrations on ceremonies rededication and investiture for various Scout levels and announced a county wide Cadette Senior Conference to be held April 19 and 20 near Edgerton.

Dr. Irvin Elected Head of Green County Medical Society

Dr. John M. Irvin was elected president of the Green County Medical Society at a St. Clare Hospital meeting. Dr. William E. Hein became vice president, Dr. Benjamin M. Bush secretary treasurer, Dr. Robert G. Zach delegate, and Dr. Hein alternate.

Johnsrud Heads Committee Again

Vern Jonsrud of New Glarus was named chairman of Green County’s Wisconsin Conservation Congress committee. Bob Hahlen became vice chairman. Wilbur Dehmer of Albany was reelected delegate and Roger Krieger of Brooklyn named alternate. The group urged hunting and fishing rule changes and noted the statewide May meeting at Stevens Point. Deer season proposals include a Nov 22-24 southwest zone opener and a nine day gun season with varied dates by region.

Reverend Gerritt Mouw to Speak at Lenten Service

Hutton Credited With Saving Lives In Madison Blaze

Bowman Dairy milkman Jack Hutton who lives in Blanchardville is credited with saving two lives during a Madison house fire. He alerted the fire department after seeing smoke and helped a 16 year old girl rescue her five year old brother from an upstairs porch. The Barker home sustained damage. Scott Barker received second degree burns and was taken to hospital.

Deer Yard Tour Reports Winter Hardship for Northern Wisconsin Deer

Jim Huntoon, district game manager, toured deer yards in Douglas and Bayfield counties. He observed fawn mortality and possible reduced reproduction due to winter conditions. Mild February weather limited major starvation, emergency browse cutting occurred, and some hay was fed, not by Department personnel and not digestible by northern deer.

Wisconsin highway toll rises as youth dies in Porter Point crash

Portage County youth Gerald Halava, 18, from Stevens Point, died when a car overturned on Highway 10 near Stevens Point. A rural Ferryville teen, Roger Brudos, 15, died when a tractor overturned near Retreat. Wildlife officials discuss deer population management and habitat improvements amid heavy snow.
