Riff on Zoning Sparks City Council Debate

The council committee and Treasurer Helen L. Gempeler reported earmarked and general reserve funds totaling about 120 thousand dollars, with future allocations planned for pool repairs and incinerator work.

Fire destroyed the Jacob Stauffer farm house on highway 69 south of Monticello. The two story structure 18 by 28 with additions burned to a shell as firemen battled through mud and fog, saving only some clothing and an electric organ donated to a church. The Stauffer family, tenanted by John, lost most furniture and bedding while firefighters protected the barn and cheese factory shed. Fire crews from New Glarus and Monticello fought the blaze several hours until 5 p.m. after being alerted by Mrs. John Stauffer at 11:30 a.m.
