Monroe's championship Cheesemakers, members of both the football and cage squads, are to be honored at a high school athletic banquet Thursday night, March 28, in the high school Building. The football banquet was postponed from fall due to arrangements with domestic science.
Robert F. Marty announces ticket sales start tomorrow after 2 pm at the Waffle shop for the civic banquet honoring the 1945-46 championship Cheesemakers. Proceeds fund dinners for guests and squad members plus travel to the state cage tournament on the A and B squads last Thursday.
A. W. Mansfield, noted university coach and basketball official, will deliver the principal address at a dinner honoring athletics in education. T. R. Holyoke serves as toast master as Kenneth Behring and Harold Davidson among others speak on sports benefits and athletic conditioning.
Green county to ship 30 Holstein heifers to Czechoslovakia as part of UNRRA led efforts to rebuild war torn European dairy herds. Cattle purchased from local herds by UNRRA through Monroe cattle buyer Berman J. Schmitz will be inspected by government agents before shipment to an east coast port for reshipment. Green county also provides several loads of cattle including purebred bulls to restock Poland's ravaged herds.
Dr Alan Nunn May a 34 year old British physicist who worked on wartime atomic research was held for trial on charges of violating the Official Secrets Act by passing atomic information to an undisclosed person. Bail was refused by Bow Court Judge Harold McKenna who ruled release might be against public policy.
Two 3 year old boys Wayne Hallett and Kenneth Bunke vanished from their flats in Two Rivers Wisconsin. A community search of 300 volunteers including 7 Boy Scouts failed to locate them by nightfall. Police and coast guard were alerted within minutes of the disappearance. The boys were last seen about 5 PM in the afternoon wearing a blue snow suit and maroon helmet for Hallett and a green snow suit and brown helmet for Bunke.
Tokyo fleet admiral Nagano, linked to Pearl Harbor, is held as a war crime suspect after entering Sugamo prison. He claims no mistake and notes Japanese officers debated attacking Hawaii versus the south, while as naval chief he ended the deadlock.
Suzanne Froedtert a Milwaukee heiress aged about 16 or 17 was released from police custody in Detroit after questioning about a runaway episode that triggered a nationwide search. Prosecutor Gerald K. O'Brien announced no prosecution was expected and said Ollie Williams 24 would be released later.
Washington leaders dismissed Secretary Wallace’s idea to bar congressmen who oppose their party on major issues from running on party tickets as impractical. John Guth aged 64 of Bancroft died from burns and injuries after a truck he drove crashed into a telephone pole near Plover on Highway 51. The vehicle caught fire following the impact.
Justice Joseph Martin of the Wisconsin supreme court died at a local hospital after a heart attack. Appointed December 31, 1934 and elected in 1937, he was Brown County native and longtime legal figure with ties to the Knights of Columbus and Elks. Survived by three daughters, a nephew who is Wisconsin attorney general, two brothers, and three grandchildren. Herbert Hoover arrives in Paris to study European food needs.
Charles Richardson a 21 year old trucker from Dubuque driving for Hare Trucks Monroe escaped serious injury when his semi overturned on highway 69 a half mile south of the city. The crash involved a Wal ker Timm truck stopped roadside and another truck driven by Otto Pinnow. No injuries were reported and traffic was halted for about 30 minutes while the wreck was cleared.
Paris report says Dr. Marcel Petiot acknowledged participating in a number of killings but denied involvement in the 27 murders on trial. He claimed a resistance group abducted Gestapo informers and killed them, while his lawyers argued two German motorcyclists were not part of the indictment.
Monroe will receive the Southern 10 football and basketball championship trophies at the league meeting in Madison. Trophy money for the football honor is expected to be shared with Portage, the 1945 co champions, and a trophy will be purchased by the high school. A Woodford bus carrying Monroe High students broke down on a hill. Driver Lyle Daley and owner Jack Armstrong could not restart the engine after three hours, giving students a forenoon holiday before returning to class.
Treasurer Emanuel G. Stauffacher reports Green county delinquent taxes total only 14251.04 with a large portion in postponed real estate not due until July 31. Delinquencies include various towns villages and cities and reflect wartime prosperity compared with 1934 levels.
The sun returns to southern Wisconsin after a week of clouds as flood fears ease. Rivers including the Chippewa and Wisconsin were cresting and then subsiding, while the Mississippi rises toward a crest by March 23 near Winona Minnesota.
