At the Green County Fire Chiefs Association annual gathering held Wednesday night March 17 at New Glarus Fire Station, officers were re elected. Henry Opferman of New Glarus was president and Don Edwards of Brodhead served as secretary treasurer. Plans for a fall firefighting school in Monroe and the Southern Wisconsin Northern Illinois Fall Fire School in Monroe were discussed along with potential purchases of new trucks. Attending were Monroe Fire Chief Joseph Benkert and Forrest Riese, with others from Belleville Juda Monticello New Glarus Browntown Albany South Wayne Fordville and Brodhead.
Green County Social Services Department employees again unanimously rejected the county offer on working conditions. Leonard Schoonover of Teamsters Local 579 said the stalemate centers on work week holidays and sick leave. The rejected proposal reportedly mirrors January terms, with the county attempting to cut fringe benefits won in the prior contract.
Heavy attacks drove South Vietnamese forces in Laos back toward the border with mounting losses. At least 110 Saigon troops were killed and 205 wounded as Landing Zone Brown and Fire Base Lolo were abandoned. North Vietnamese artillery and mortars pounded rear positions while US bombers prepared to strike massing troops.
Wet heavy snowfall blanketed Green County with large flakes, forecast to reach four inches. Winds to 40 mph cause drifting and slick surfaces. Accidents reported on Highway 59 near Albany. no injuries. Army Lt Dennis Dalton from Pardeeville reported KIA in Southeast Asia. County plows worked to clear slush as motorists urged to stay off roads except emergencies.
