Two Days Left to Register for April City Election

Family narrowly escapes house fire near South Wayne
A family of five awoke to flames in their wooden two story farm home five miles southwest of South Wayne near the Wisconsin Illinois line. Fire, likely from faulty wiring, engulfed the upstairs as the family fled from a downstairs bedroom. Neighbors and the Brownstown fire department saved nearby structures. damage estimate not given. Rockford Man Injured in Weekend Crash
Bernard Harris age 41 of Rockford sustained severe head and skull injuries in a Saturday night crash on a curve at the intersection of highway 81 and county trunks just inside Rock county near Brodhead. He was admitted to St. Clare hospital at 12:50 a.m. Sunday after the 10:25 p.m. incident. Also hurt were Burnell Almond Beloit route 4 with facial cuts and bruises and a shoulder injury and Richard Longseth Beloit with neck and shoulder injuries. Almond was the driver and owner of the car. sheriff's deputies cited loss of control on a curve.

Jacob Minor Ocker 73 a native of Orangeville and former farmer west of Winslow died Saturday afternoon at his Lena home. Funeral services will be at 2 p m tomorrow at Amity Lutheran Church with Rev C C Warfel officiating. Burial will be in Christian Hollow Cemetery near Winslow. He was born September 26 1878 at Orangeville son of Michael and Carrie Ocker. He married Margaret Abels April 18 1901 at Ackley Iowa. They farmed west of Winslow before moving to Lena in 1940. Survived by his widow three daughters Mrs Elmer Droster Burlington Wis Mrs Margery Sullivan Elkhorn and Mrs Duane Brechtel Waddhams Grove Ill three sons Roscoe Beloit John Winslow and Jacob Jr Chicago 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Preceded in death by daughter Helene 1915 and son Leroy who was killed in Navy action in the Pacific in World War II 1944. Leroy was a former Monroe resident who worked here in service stations before entering service.

Mrs. Elsbeth Engler 86 of New Glarus died Saturday at her home after years of declining health. Her son William B. Engler Jr. 61, a prominent businessman, died the previous Sunday. Survived by two brothers, a sister, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren, she was buried in Swiss Evangelical and Reformed church cemetery after services by Rev. Lynn F. B. Tschudy at Zentner funeral home.
