Former President Lyndon B. Johnson arrived at his Texas ranch near Stonewall after nearly two weeks of hardening of the heart arteries treatment. Doctors recommended rest and limited activity as he gradually resumes normal levels.
U S jet fighter bombers destroyed a North Vietnamese helicopter on the ground in the Ho Chi Minh Trail region of southern Laos, marking the first confirmed kill of a helicopter in Laos. Unconfirmed reports previously cited sightings in the Plain of Jars in northeastern Laos.
Thousands of municipal workers walked out for higher pay halting streetcars buses and cable cars. Officials said five unions with more than 7000 members could disrupt schools waterfront activity and the airport. Two thousand five hundred nurses and hospital staff also struck.
Interior Secretary Walter J. Hickel said Chevron Oil Co. is responsible after inspecting offshore Gulf operations, charging the company removed an $800 safety device that would have shut off the well in an emergency. He blamed lax regulations and warned the storm choke would have controlled the spill if standards from August had been met.
AP reports Conservative wins a vacant Bridgwater seat as youth turnout shifts voters. Labour calls the claim hasty. Tories gain an 8.6 percent swing and a larger majority of 4,800 votes in southwest England.
Wisconsin Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations reports February unemployment benefits totaling 8.1 million, up from 7 million in January. At month end 44,310 workers were on benefit claims, compared with 31,200 a year earlier. The Wisconsin Telephone Co. wins approval to cut eight party rural service in Janesville exchange, Rock County.
Madison AP report says Donald W. Wilkinson Wisconsin secretary of agriculture called for a county fair study after the current Wisconsin State Fair ends in 1971. He told the 58th annual Wisconsin Live Stock Breeders Association meeting that closing must be taken seriously and proposed options include a fragmented or privately run state fair with an in-depth UW study by a rural sociologist.
President Nixon asked Congress for a new Employe Benefits Protection Act to curb conflicts of interest in private pension funds. The plan would create federal standards, broaden reporting, and empower labor officials to enforce transparency, with state banking and securities laws allowed to remain in effect. The proposal mirrors themes from a 1968 measure by Willard Wirtz and urges prompt action on related labor and safety proposals.
Atty. Gen. Robert Warren withdrew from the 1970 Wisconsin Republican governor’s race citing lack of money and organization, pledging wholehearted support for Lt. Gov. Jack Olson. The move leaves Olson with fewer intraparty challenges as GOP plans its Milwaukee convention amid Knowles not seeking re election. Warren hinted at future public service but did not commit to re election as attorney general, while Olson eyed other contenders such as Milo Knutson. A separate item notes Amtrak requested discont inue of 34 long distance trains by April 15.
Construction on the S.T.H. 81 and S.T.H. 69 interchange resumed March 2, 1970. Albany village president Ed Killingstad announces the groundbreaking of the first federally financed elderly housing project. Albany Housing Authority under Duane Dixon leads planning for a 33 unit, three story building at Mill and Main Streets overlooking Sugar River. The Public Facilities Associates development in Madison uses a turn key method and aims to be among the finest HUD programs. Bowen and Kanazawa designed the aesthetic structure costing over half a million dollars, with completion anticipated in October.
The Green County Unit of the American Cancer Society opened its fund drive at Marco's Supper Club aiming for 7170 dollars, up from last year. Guest speaker R O McLean urged “a penny a day” donations to reach 3.60 dollars, noted research advances in Hogkin’s disease and leukemia, and stressed volunteer work as crucial. Appleton authorities blamed arson for two early today fires in the city. One struck the ROTC building at Lawrence University where Curtis Tarr once led the group before a Defense Department post last year. Gasoline was set alight and a can found atop a propane tank. Hours later a fire at Appleton West High School damaged a classroom and the Early American Room with incendiaries thrown through windows. A pop bottle with a wick and bottle fragments were recovered. The state fire marshal is assisting the investigation.
