Zim Uncertain Role As Acting Governor After Trip Cancel

Secretary of State Robert Zimmerman questioned whether he would serve as acting governor after Gov. Reynolds canceled his Europe trade mission. Reynolds scrapped the overseas trip to back a home campaign and Olson will lead the mission with a possible one day acting tenure for Zimmerman. Reynolds was to leave Milwaukee for Washington then return to Madison.

Stock Prices Climb as Market Advances in New York

NEW YORK Steels were active as the stock market continued to advance late this afternoon. Trading was fairly heavy with volume around 5.5 million shares versus 4.82 million Friday. Key stocks gained fractions to over a point, led by U S Steel Republic Steel and Jones and Laughlin. Motors also strengthened with General Motors Chrysler up over a point and Ford up modestly.

City Taverns Stay Open in Monroe Primary Election

Monroe voters head to Turner hall for the primary with polls open 9 am to 6 pm. City Council allows taverns to stay open under a new state law. Voters will choose among mayoral candidates Walter R. Police said 25 people aboard a Colombian airliner apparently perished Sunday night when it crashed 18 miles south of Bogota.

Wisconsin Traffic Toll Rises With Weekend Crashes

The Associated Press reports Wisconsin weekend traffic crashes killed multiple people including John Sutton and Robert Henning of Columbus struck on Highway 151 near Madison. Gerald Wittner of Madison faces homicide with a vehicle charges after fleeing. Other fatalities include Max and Ethel Benitz in a Soo Line collision near Chippewa Falls and Ida Be Beau in Ashland area. Additional deaths include David Thompson and Gilman Harden in separate crashes along Highway 118 and Highway 69. Previous victims include Mrs. Coates, Gail Book, and Wayne Schnabel.

Co pilot killed as DC3 crashes into Chicago area home

A chartered DC3 attempting to land at O’Hare in mist struck a Hoffman Estates home late Sunday night killing co pilot Daniel Jordan of Gary Indiana. Pilot Virgil Pronovost of Robinson Illinois survived in critical condition after being trapped for about two hours.

Monroe visitor Gilman W Harden 35 Madison on a cheese buying trip died in a Saturday crash on Highway 69 near Basco. Passenger William E Kunstman 40 Verona injured with a broken shoulder. Driver Frank E Geiger 69 Basco treated for chest bruises and released after being ticketed for failing to yield. Geiger’s wife died in a separate crash last November.
