Farmers Hand Milk Amid Outage Across Area

Area farmers, affected by a continuing power outage, return to hand milking. St Victor’s School Seeks Donations to Stay Open

St Victor’s parishioners were told at Sunday Mass that the school faces a shortfall in funding. Finance spokesman James Walsh urged an additional 40 cents per dollar, rising to 42 cents by September, to cover salaries and costs until June. Wisconsin Power and Light calls storm worst in history

The ice storm crippled power across the Monroe area with up to 80,000 customers affected. Crews worked 16-hour shifts to restore power, aided by outside teams, Monroe Fire Department and National Guard. Local Red Cross offered food and shelter, water was provided free to farmers, and many farms milking by hand or generators. Community relief included storage space from Swiss Colony and area locker plants.

Town Meeting-76 Draws 214 Participants at Monroe High

Monroe hosts Town Meeting-76 with 214 participants in a day of discussion groups addressing city challenges and proposals for the coming years. A separate youth session had 37 participants. A symbol song and community story were created, and organizers call for follow up forums.

Ford wins northwoods straw vote in Rhinelander

Ford captured 31 percent of about 300 votes in the Rhinelander Daily News straw poll ahead of the Wisconsin primary. Reagan earned 17 percent while Humphrey drew 11 percent. Ford led Republicans with 60 percent. Humphrey led Democrats with 25 percent, followed by Jackson, Udall, Carter, and Wallace in declining shares.
