Voter turnout hit 1,302 by 1 p.m. in the city election showing a record early level for an April primary. The tally surpassed April 1958 and last year’s March figures, with historical comparisons highlighting stronger participation in the mayoral and Fifth Ward alderman contests.
The Monroe Evening Times will provide telephone results on the mayoralty primary between 6 30 and 8 30 p m. A wait of about one hour after polls close is expected for figures and readers may call Telephone No. 3 up to 8 30 p m for the results.
By 1 p.m. 174 ballots had been cast of 4,266 registered voters. First Ward led with 201 votes. Second 166. Third 184. Fourth 126. Fifth 167. Sixth 170. Seventh 159. Eighth 129. Polls opened at 9 a.m. and close at 5:30 p.m. Mayoral candidates include Schiller, Laeser Jr., Evans and Humbel. Aldermanic contenders are Daley, Leck and Skattum.
South Wayne will face Benton and Gratiot meets Cassville tonight in Belmont for the Blackhawk Grade School basketball tournament second round. In the first round Cassville beat Potosi 22 20 Gra tiot topped Hazel Green 46 24 South Wayne defeated Belmont 33 31 and Benton beat Shullsburg 31 13.
Nashua Claremont and Berlin report heavier than usual balloting as New Hampshire voters participate in the first presidential primary. In Millsfield four Republican votes went to Nixon with Powell's write in for vice president. Hart's Location backed Kennedy four votes and Nixon two. Nashua sees about 1000 ballots in three hours. overall turnout may surpass 100000. Nixon and Kennedy tout NH primary as national barometer amid sharp exchanges involving Gov Powell and accusations of communism.
Seven Monroe High School seniors on the Badger Conference champion basketball team carry a 16 percent unit average and 2,490 academic honor points over seven semesters. Grams Roethe Muenich and Mauerman highlighted the honor roll with four straight years of A's. Dannerbeck Cox and Carter also listed among seniors.
STEVENS POINT The Board of Control of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association ruled today that two members of the Waukesha high school basketball team who posed for a photo used in an advertisement will remain eligible for continued competition. The boys are Dave Merryfield and Tony Gabrysiak. The board approved a report stating the boys were innocently victimized by a commercial concern seeking its own gain and that the use was without their consent or knowledge.
Gov Nelson vetoed a bill to exempt a corporation with ten or fewer stockholders from corporate income tax and tax stockholders personally. He said the measure fails to provide fair small business tax relief and creates a favored tax position for small holdings regardless of firm size or finances.

Louis Milan, manager of the Wisconsin Automobile Trades Association, spoke at a Monroe New Car and Truck Dealers Association dinner at the Swiss Wheel. He covered the Sunday closing law that took effect last August, while Edward M. Adam of the First National Bank and Boy Scout committee chair discussed Cub Scouting progress.
Gov. Nelson told the House agriculture committee that a self help dairy plan would set producer quotas and penalties for excess production to align supply with demand. He proposes direct payments to farmers during a transition period and notes mixed support among Wisconsin dairy leaders.
West Palm Beach reports that seventeen year old Dennis Whitney has admitted his seventh murder as part of a coast to coast spree. He claims to have killed two men in Phoenix on Monday, after previously confessing to another. Sheriff John Kirk said Whitney confessed to firing a .22 into the head of a Phoenix bum found in an abandoned bus in a parking lot. Police identified the victim as Ira Lee Hardison, 55.
John E. Ferron owner of Ferron's Men's Wear announces move of his store to the former Daugherty drug store building early in May. The current clothing shop will become Marco's dining room and cocktail lounge expansion.
D L Mossman chairman designate for the Alice in Dairyland regional event announced by Dr C G Hennager and Howard McCoy as co chairman. Mossman, new to the region, joined from Baraboo November 1 and previously led a power firm post. A date for the event was not set. The meeting at the Eugene hotel covered store closing hour poll results and merchant protection steps against check frauds. Chamber secretary Norman Schmeltzer plans to resign July 1, with discussions on a successor and office space.
President Eisenhower returns from a 15,500 mile Latin American swing and will address the nation tonight at 6 Monroe time. Networks plan live broadcast of the 15 minute report from the White House. He will not hold a news conference this week due to the speech and other duties. He landed at Andrews Air Force Base after stops in Puerto Rico and a tour of Brazil Argentina Chile and Uruguay.
Myron West a former Green County sheriff aged 62 died at 6 p.m. in Spooner Memorial hospital after a two week hospitalization. He ran Deerwood Lodge at Three Lakes and served two terms as sheriff along with early roles as under sheriff and deputy. Funeral arrangements were pending at Blum funeral home in Shell Lake.
Foreign ministers of the Western Big Three and West Germany are reported to premiss a mid April meeting in Washington to prepare for talks with the Soviet Union.
U S Secretary of State Herter condemned Fidel Castro for claiming American involvement in the La Coubre explosions. He called the charges baseless and extremely provocative. Cuban officials and Press reports described tensions rising after the dressing down of Cuban representative Enrique Patterson. Meanwhile a Nebraska passenger on a freighter faced security scrutiny in Miami, denying any prior Cuba visit.
Frank G. Good 73 of 833 11th Street died at 2 45 a.m. today at his home after a five week illness. He was born May 21 1886 in Stephenson County and married Myrtle Kee Yost on May 2 1912 in Monroe. He farmed in Cadiz Township then retired to Monroe in 1944. Survived by wife daughter Mrs William Herbert step son Avery Yost two grandchildren two brothers and two sisters. He was a Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star member and treasurer of Cadiz Township for 21 years. Services 1 30 p.m. Thursday Stuessy Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood cemetery. Masonic rites 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Democratic National Chairman Paul M. Butler apologized for implying President Eisenhower bore responsibility for the deaths of 19 Navy bandmen killed in a Rio de Janeiro crash. He said he did not mean to accuse the President and issued a public apology to the President and the American people.
Three top posts named for the 1960 United Fund of Monroe campaign at a Monroe Clinic library session. J. T. Etter to head the campaign committee, Dr. James R. Weir leads the budget committee, and Edward M. Adam directs the publicity drive.
The New York stock market weakened and closed lower after a volatile session. Trading remained moderately active with about 3.3 million shares. Key issues fell several points while a few select stocks showed larger declines, after an early slide and mid-session stabilization.
Girl Scouts of Troop 217 baby sat for polling mothers during the primary election as part of a service drive. Scout Sunday kicked off Girl Scout Week with church attendance and activities at North School. Troops 317 246 and 241 joined a flag ceremony and the Juliette Low World Friendship collection. Demonstrations on uniforms folk dancing and refreshments were held. Window displays by Troops 312 247 219 and 217 showcase the Scout program. Monroe counts 496 girls including 199 Brownies 216 intermediates and 81 seniors. A radio program featured Senior Scouting with members detailing Child Care emergency prep and other projects. A Brownie Play Day is planned at East School with folk dancing games and songs. Today marks Girl Scout Citizenship Day.
Four Russian soldiers were rescued by the U.S. Navy carrier Kearsarge after 49 days adrift in a 50-foot landing craft. The men, weak and emaciated, were picked up about 11 p.m. EST Sunday, roughly 1,000 miles west-northwest of Midway Island. Their boat was crippled and swept southward by a storm on January 17 near Etorofu in the Kuriles north of Japan.
