March arrived with mild rain then snow as Monroe observes a wolf in lamb’s clothing weather pattern. Forecaster Howard Thompson notes lamb like entry but offers no solid forecast. Groundhog predictions clash with temps, leaving residents debating coats, gloves and umbrellas amid fluctuating records and a drier February.
An advertising man testified Edwin W. Pauley’s Petro Corporation paid the salaries of two California legislators for five months in 1939 and 1940. Chet Crank said he was reimbursed $200 monthly for each man, identified as John W. Evans and Cecil R. King who worked Sept 1, 1939 to Mar 1, 1940. Cecil King is noted as a Democrat and current California congressman.
Dr W B Gnagi Jr vacationing at Lake Nipigon Ontario caught a 7 pound 12 ounce brook trout. His fly caught beauty won first in the brook trout fly casting division ahead of L T Meisner's 7 pound 10 ounce second place. The Gapen's spitefire fly was used and the lodge is run by Don Gapen, formerly of Monroe.

The March nationwide telephone strike will affect only long distance calls in Monroe. Local calls will not be interrupted. Equipment shortages are a worry as Western Electric has not shipped a switchboard unit since Dec 15. The company has telephones but not switchboards to connect them. Calls should be placed now as long distance service may be halted when the strike takes effect.
The New Glarus centennial celebration was set for August 16 17 and 18 after a war related postponement. Plans include a pageant parade music and a singers festival plus sports and a homecoming. A commemorative booklet will be printed detailing the town's 100 year history edited by Miss Miriam Theiler.
