Truman signs eight month rent control extension
President Truman signed a law extending federal rent controls for eight months and allowing landlords to seek up to a 15 percent increase with leases through December 1948. He called the act inadequate and said it avoids total loss of price controls while warning it will raise rents for millions amid a housing shortage. He noted vetoing was unlikely to yield another measure and labeled the voluntary 15 percent clause voluntary only for landlords.
