AP News In Brief reports Washington expects the first installment of a 6.5 billion spending boost to show up in paychecks next Wednesday as the five percent income surtax ends and personal income exemptions rise. Officials say the move may help the soft economy even if it won’t curb inflation.
Linda Johnson the 1970 Miss Wisconsin winner, a blond pianist, says the crown carries an obligation to represent the state well beyond the pageant. She describes it as an honor and a challenge and emphasizes what she does afterward.
The Milwaukee Journal Co. printed an abbreviated Sentinel after most craft unionists walked out. Spokesmen for the Typographical Union and other AFL-CIO unions urged workers in composing, mail, and press rooms to avoid idle action, but about 750 members chose to stop work. The Sentinel issued one of its four regular morning editions.
The Organization of American States appears to have reached a virtual consensus to condemn political kidnappings and urge the Juridical Inter-American Committee to study countermeasures. A Sunday draft resolution deems such kidnappings as crimes whose gravity makes them crimes against humanity.
Miss Carol Newman of Juda was crowned 1970 Green County Dairy Queen after an hour long parade down Main Street Blanchardville with 11 county beauties and dignitaries in attendance. Outgoing queen Darleen Rufener passed the crown, while Rachel Eichelkraut of New Glaris was named 1970 Dairy Princess. Wisconsin’s Alice in Dairyland Sue Masterson served as parade marshal and guest of honor.
Miss Masterson wowed crowds as the Dairy Day program honored county dairy queens and participants. Two girls were named county dairy representatives while the event boosted pride in Green County’s dairy industry and local behind the scenes workers.
Chicago area trucking firms are expected to sign contracts with striking drivers for a $1.65 an hour pay boost over 36 months, says Local 705 secretary Louis F. Peick. He notes several firms indicated willingness while drivers rejected a prior offer.
Violence eased in Northern Ireland after five civilians were killed and more than 200 injured in Saturday night riots. British troops remained on alert as emergency measures and curfews were imposed. At the New Hope Rock Festival near Iola 46 000 attendees faced water shortages thefts and fighting. By Sunday three people were shot none seriously injured and 26 taken into custody as about 6 000 remained. Officials described a violent disruption amid a crowd that earlier enjoyed a carefree mood.
