Fifteen Paper Firms Face Antitrust Charges

A federal grand jury profile accuses fifteen major paper firms of conspiring since 1951 to fix pulpwood prices paid to small farmers landowners and government units. The civil actions total one in Milwaukee and two in Madison with thirteen individuals named. The scheme allegedly used 600000 cords annually and priced paper products at two billion dollars in annual sales.

Dairy Day Parade to Highlight Monroe Band and Swiss Misses

Matzke Wins Green County Bake-off With Hamburger Bake

Mrs. Gayle N. Matzke of 1422 21st avenue won first prize in Green County Bake-off held yesterday at the Power and Light Company kitchen. Her Hamburger Bake recipe advances to Madison TV program in September. finalists include Mrs. Eugene Meier Juda Madeline Bosben and Barbara Wegmueller with judges Mrs. Arnold Marty Mrs. Mae Abram and Miss Helen Green.

Grass fire near railroad tracks extinguished by Monroe FD

Monroe volunteer fire department was called to the Delbert Rothenbuehler residence Route 4 to stop a grass fire along railroad tracks. The second general alarm was turned in. Earlier, firefighters prevented a car fire on 13th Street in the 2300 block involving Mrs. Robert Becker of Brodhead. Wiring in the vehicle was destroyed.

Wisconsin Supreme Court upholds pension plan law

The Wisconsin Supreme Court rules a 1961 statute requiring most counties to join a state contributory pension plan constitutional. Milwaukee County's independent pension fund remains exempt from the law.

July 4 Events Scheduled Here in Monroe

The Monroe Fire Department and City Band plan a Fourth of July salute at Twining Park. Firefighters offer rides on city fire trucks from 2 to 4 pm and hand out ice cream cups to children. The Chamber of Commerce distributes flags for the evening program with a flag ceremony by the firemen. The band concert at 8 pm in Outdoor Community Theater features Allan F. Barnard directing and guest vocalist William Rollins.

United Action Council Plans Welcome Home for Guardsmen

The United Action Council formed by local groups will advisory assist community projects and organize a welcome home for National Guard members from Company B and other units. A tentative Aug 25 return date is set with a park picnic, concert, Armory dance, flag displays, bell ringing, and church services planned.

Trade expansion bill gains House support as Kennedy eye districts

President Kennedy and his aides celebrate a House passage of the broad trade expansion bill 298 to 0 familiar with 253 to 171 on a substitute. The measure aims to keep the dollar strong, deepen Western Europe ties, and may replace the current law pending Senate action. The bill allows tariff cuts up to 50 percent and even to zero in some cases with aid for firms hurt by imports.

Disc Jockey Faulk Wins Libel Damages In Red Plot Case

Former disc jockey John Henry Faulk was awarded 3.5 million dollars in libel damages after an 11 to 1 jury verdict against Aware Inc Vincent Hartnett and Laurence A Johnson in a Syracuse New York trial. The award totaled 1 million in compensatory damages and 1.25 million each in punitive damages from Aware and Hartnett. Johnson’s estate faced no punitive damages due to the judge’s ruling. Johnson died earlier in a Bronx motel as he faced ill health.

Wisconsin Assembly Approves Final Redistricting Plan

The Wisconsin Assembly voted 54 to 40 to approve the final section of a Republican redistricting plan with Senate concurrence expected, as Gov. Gaylord Nelson could veto. Only one Democrat, Vincent Mathews, joined the GOP on the final roll. The move comes before a federal court deadline and ahead of possible GOP recess for further action.
