A Superior railroad official Leo Culhane aged 65 and his wife Florence 61 were killed in a head on crash with a Douglas County highway patrol car rushing to a separate accident. Lt Lawrence Golden 43 sustained severe injuries and paralysis to his left side as the patrol car collided with the Culhane vehicle. The incident raised Wisconsin’s highway toll for the year to 390.

The all time one day swimming pool attendance record was broken for the second time this season with 1 344 visitors. Pool manager Thomas Norager said the total surpassed the 1 286 record set on June 12. The season total reached 16 553, up from 6 894 at the same point in 1960.
