Pension Hopes Dim in Senate Over WWI Veterans Bill
Washington prospects dim for Senate action on a House-passed pension bill with a $90 monthly plan for World War I veterans. The measure, stripped of enhanced payments for service disabled and widows, passed the House 364-51 and awaits Senate consideration as Sen. Byrd cautions a full agenda. The bill would raise some pensions and add a 10 percent overseas service premium, with strict income limits and a $15 boost for those needing regular aid. About three million WWI veterans would be eligible at age 65 under the income rules.
