Monroe officials back in office after council vote
Eleven Monroe officials including all eight city members on the County Board the city treasurer and two aldermen were restored to office following a city council meeting. City Attorney Arthur Benkett ruled vacancies existed due to failure to file oaths and the council must determine status. The mayor had earlier declared ten posts vacant but Benkett said the mayor lacks authority to declare vacancies. The meeting adjourned before appointments were made and the aldermen’s letter urging cooperation with the mayor was read. The mayor and council seek unity and a prepared path forward for city government.

Krattiger Wins Tractor Contest at Madison Event

Ship Explosion Sets River Afire
A Swedish freighter rammed an oil tanker on the East River at 2:25 a m causing a fire that engulfed the water and even set Manhattan Bridge ablaze. The tanker sank. three crew members were reported missing. Forty-seven people were injured or saved as flames and gasoline slicked the river. one photographer died of a heart attack. The Nebraska and Express Bay were involved. the latter sank while the Nebraska reached port.

Gopher Rabies Warning After Local Bites
