Barbara Brown of Independence received the Alice in Dairyland crown at the Marathon County fairgrounds in Wausau. Mary Ellen McCabe of Ladysmith was crowned Wisconsin's Dairy Queen, while Roberta Caldwell of Madison was named Wisconsin's Dairy Princess and will compete at the International Dairy Show. Rain shortened the ceremony and a long parade preceded the event.

The 1955 Wisconsin Legislature met January through June and approved a 29 million dollar income surtax over two years, raised cigarette tax by four cents to 7.4 million, and adopted a 253 million dollar budget for the next biennium. They raised gasoline tax to six cents a gallon, created a 250-man traffic patrol, and an 85-member driver license enforcement force. The session rejected Gov Kohler’s request to integrate regents boards, merged UW extension with state college in Milwaukee, and debated union campaign contribution bans. A brucellosis program expanded to all counties and a new 6 million dollar state school for boys was planned. Gov Kohler warned of a veto over the integration plan failure.

Kohler's 1955 Wisconsin session ends after surtax approval
Madison reports the 72nd Wisconsin Legislature recessed after passing a 20 percent state income surtax to fund operations for the next two years. Gov Kohler hailed the session as the most constructive in a quarter century while noting highway, welfare, agriculture and education measures. The tax hike also included a cigarette tax increase and a higher gas tax set to take effect July 1.

Carter and Gruenewald Co of Juda has purchased the Kane Farm Equipment Co in Monroe on Highway 11 West from the Kane estate and will take possession Monday. Ruef will manage the Monroe operation with the present staff retained and International Harvester equipment and repairs to continue. William Kane, who started the business in 1948, died suddenly on June 13.

Eisenhower protest over Soviet attack during New England tour
President Eisenhower sought a response from the Soviet Union after a Russian jet attack on a lightly armed U.S. Navy P2V5 Neptune over international waters near Alaska. Seven of the 11 crew were wounded when the patrol plane crash landed on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea. The president, touring New England, signed the Austrian independence treaty and pressed for a Russian reply as Hagerty reported no word from Washington.
