President Believes A-bomb Reduces Plane Total Needs

In World War II raids reached 500 planes, but single atomic bombs could match that power. President Eisenhower argues security isn’t tied to a fixed plane count, noting three bombers with modern weapons can replicate much of the Normandy breakout’s firepower. The Air Force pushes 143 wings, while critics doubt the linkage. Gen Vandenberg contends bomb payload must align with target delivery, citing interlocking bomber fire. Debate centers on whether U.S. air power should shrink with atomic potency or maintain force levels for assured defense. The discussion spans projected wings, manpower estimates, and service-wide strength within a broader defense plan.
