Taft Backers See Pennsylvania Votes Swing to Him
Taft backers claim Governor Duff may tilt Pennsylvania toward Taft if the Vandenberg boom falters. Duff reportedly told Taft he will press for Pennsylvania’s 73 convention votes for Vandenberg, who denies candidacy. If Vandenberg loses momentum, Duff could shift to Taft as Illinois and Bricker paths shape the nomination.

Oleo Civil Rights Fight Sparks Senate Debate
The Senate spent about 40 minutes debating the oleo tax repeal bill before it was folded into a long range farm measure. Senator Fulbright plans to offer the oleo measure as an amendment to the farm bill, while Senator Langer moved to attach the anti-lynching bill to the oleo measure. A 57 to 26 vote allowed continued consideration, with Senator Wiley steering a lengthy talk on policy. The farm bill seeks a new price support system to replace those ending in 1948 as the House already passed an 18 month extension. Republican leaders aim to pass a farm bill before adjournment, risking a butter rights filibuster.
