Reunion of Coffman family spans states and decades

Arline Coffman Berkeley of Mukwonago joined the broad Coffman clan in Madison for a reunion. Relatives included Ramon “Uncle Ray” Coffman of Fort Lauderdale, his son Eugene and wife at a dessert party. Rites on Saturday for Mrs Mae Knight of Monroe

Mrs Mae Knight 90, Monroe, widow of Michael J Knight, died at 5 a.m. June 12 at 1806 10th St from a heart attack. She had been in apparent good health. Funeral services are set for Saturday June 14 at 9 a.m. in the St Nessy Funeral Home and 9:30 a.m. at St Victor's Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Flag Disposal Ceremony Planned By VFW Post

County service officer W E Deininger announced a Flag Disposal Ceremony to honor worn flags. Individuals may dispose of flags themselves or hand them to the VFW for a public ceremony to be announced later, as Flag Day soon approach. The notice cites Flag Day and Independence Day display needs. The report also notes Japan's Mutsu, first nuclear powered vessel, was launched with no protests in the United States.

Two Men Charged in 1967 Thill Slaying Near Dubuque

East Dubuque men Daniel Shaw aged 19 and Paul Duffy aged 22 were arrested after a lengthy probe into the June 12 1967 death of Hilbert E Thill Jr. Thill 31 resided at the Dubuque YMCA and was found beaten along the Mississippi River beach. A hearing is set for June 18 in Galena before Circuit Judge Gundry.

Local Men Headed to Camp McCoy for Army Guard Training

Several Wisconsin Army National Guard personnel from Monroe Janesville and surrounding towns prepare for summer drills at Camp McCoy June 14 to 28. Officers include Capt William Riese and Maj Coplien with the 132nd Support Battalion. Others named are Emmett J O Donahue, Harold Lehnherr, William Johnston, Bob Collins and Keith Albright among many. A memorial service was held Monday night at the VFW Club.

Monroe Tornado Hits Airport Damaging Hangar and Planes

A tornado struck Monroe around 1 a.m. damaging the Municipal Airport hangar and eight aircraft, with four destroyed and others partially damaged. No warnings were issued. power outages and several traffic accidents followed as residents watched the storm from basements. Weather officials issued a tornado watch for parts of the region.

Flag Crochet Display Honors Air Force Grad at Bank

Mrs. Wittwer’s 5 by 7 foot American flag crocheted for her grandson Leon A. Wittwer will be shown at the First National Bank all day Friday with a flag lowering ceremony by the Madison Senior Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps at 7 30 p m at the bank corner. The display ties into Flag Day events set for June 14. Mrs Wittwer will be at the bank during evening hours.
