Former Green County sheriff's deputy Raymond J. Lavalle, 19 at D-Day, landed on Omaha Beach and fought in France and Germany. Now 44, he is a VA Hospital patient in Madison with a lingering war wound that forced retirement from the DeForest police, after serving as sheriff's deputy from 1955 to 1960. He spent two months with occupation forces in Germany before returning to Chicago and work with the Milwaukee Road. His sons served in the Marines and Army in Vietnam.

Mrs. Robert Czachowski recalls happiness of her three children as they left Milwaukee for a north woods vacation. Nine people from Milwaukee died in a log cabin fire near Three Lakes Oneida County including a newly ordained priest, the Grede family and three Czachowski children. The flames destroyed the two story log cabin days after the group rented it for a lakeside getaway.
