Egyptian National Assembly voted to insist that Gamal Abdel Nasser remain president despite his offer to resign. Nasser said he would stay until Egypt erases aggression and voters should decide later. The UN reported ongoing Middle East fighting with air attacks and shelling as Syria and Israel blamed each other for violations of a cease-fire.

Actress Vivien Leigh aged fifty two is reported in London with a recurrence of tuberculosis. Medical updates say she remains under treatment at a hospital and will require ongoing care.
