Anthracite Pact Ready for Signing

A week-long stoppage ends as anthracite operators and UMW officials reach a new contract. Miners return to work Monday with an 18 percent wage rise and a 2.7 million dollar health and welfare fund funded by a five cent per ton royalty. The fund will be managed by three trustees two named by Lewis. Analysts estimate industry costs at 50 to 60 million dollars yearly. Ralph Taggart warns of higher prices, while Lewis endorses the deal and plans a membership referendum.

Farmers Warned Against Hay Preservatives In State

Grassland Field Day to Entertain Farmer, Family

The state’s first grassland field day will be held Tuesday, June 11, at the Stauffacher brothers’ farm near Monticello, hosted by the University of Wisconsin grasslands committee with county agricultural groups. An 18 year old Kentuckian, Shorty Sprouse, married 79 year old widow Mrs. Mattie Lyons Large in Lawrence county court house. Judge J F Wellman officiated after being summoned from a hardware store. Over 100 witnesses witnessed the brief ceremony as the couple planned to reside in Mrs Lyons Large's clapboard cabin nearby.

Warm spell ends as Wisconsin cools from record highs

The weather bureau forecast a cooldown across Wisconsin from a weekend high near 90 degrees to 45 to 68 in the north and 52 to 72 in the south by tonight and tomorrow. Yesterday set season highs in Blair Trempealeau county matching a prior 90 degree record, with various cities recording 80s. Park Falls saw heavy rainfall totaling 3.14 inches as Milwaukee’s low stayed at 70 for the season’s highest minimum.

Recreation Park Summer Plans Announced by Simpson

Recreation park opens its summer program Monday under Miss Phoebe Lindsay and Fred Simpson. Registrations run 9 to 12 a.m. for ages 14 and up and 1:30 to 4 p.m. for under 10. Courses include archery tennis handicraft singing and baseball. Swim pool opens June 16 with free day each Friday and adults gain free access any time. Family tickets cost 10 dollars and single tickets 2.50 with adult season at 3.50 and 15-swim booklets for 1. Daily prices are 10 cents for under 14 and 20 cents for adults.

Nearly All Stolen Gems Found In War Probe

Army investigators said nearly all jewels valued up to 1.5 million dollars stolen from Kronberg castle in Germany have been recovered. The remaining pieces were found at Illinois Centre station in Chicago after questioning Col. Jack W. Durant and his wife Kathleen B. Nash Durant, both held in the case. Col Ralph W. Imil diamonds and gems seized display in Washington

The war department displayed a cache of Imil diamonds emeralds and other gems from Germany's historic castle in Maj. Gen Floyd L Parks office. Durant couple implicated in a wartime jewel theft case. A polygraph aided confessions while investigators traced them from Chicago to Hudson Wisconsin Minneapolis and St Paul. End Union Bible School Program Ends With Awards and Choir

The first Union Daily Vacation Bible School closed with a program at the Methodist church showing pupils’ achievements. Rev Newell Mendenhall led the opening flag salute with students from beginners to intermediates sang songs, recited psalms, and received awards for perfect attendance and memorization. Total enrollment was 173 with 75 perfect attendees. Offerings totaled 75 dollars, part sent to mission fields. The second Union Bible School will include all Monroe churches.
