UW Honors Convocation Honors Monroe Students

Two Monroe students, James N. Roethe and Thomas N. Mitchell, were among 72 UW Madison honorees at the All University Honors Convocation held in the Wisconsin Fieldhouse. Roethe received the William J. Hagenah scholarship for the Wisconsin Law Review editor in chief, and Mitchell received the Guy M. Sundt memorial scholarship for excellence in scholarship, activities, and athletics.

Dirt con men target homeowners in spring schemes

Monroe Police warn residents of transient con men using dirt or peat moss to pressure payments. In one case three men unloaded material at a home, attempted to bill the owner, who refused without attorney advice. Police urge reporting similar encounters and caution against paying or signing contracts without legal consultation.

Argyle Fire Contained After Midnight Restaurant Blaze

A pre dawn fire at Bernice Elmer's restaurant in Argyle was checked by Argyle, Monroe, and Browntown fire crews. The building suffered heavy interior damage while nearby wooden structures and a jewelry store were evacuated as a precaution. Cause undetermined though wiring is suspected.

Anniversary set for Rev. Kehle 50 years ordained

Ripon Wisconsin Rev Paul C Kehle longtime St Johns United Church of Christ pastor will observe the 50th anniversary of his ordination on June 17 On May 28 a surprise celebration honored him at Our Savior’s United Church of Christ in Ripon He previously served Berlin Wisconsin Le Mars Indiana and Monroe succeeding the late Rev Alfred Schuh who led St Johns for 43 years Kehle a Grant County native and Elmhurst College Eden Theological Seminary graduate left St Johns for Monroe in 1938

Monroe High Plans Fall School Exchange With Drury High

Rotary Grants Awarded to Monroe Area Students

The Monroe Rotary Club announced three scholarships for area graduates. Gregory Engen and Barbara Jo Dahmen each receive 150 and 300 dollar awards respectively, with Donna Holcomb previously named a 300 dollar recipient. All will attend Wisconsin State Universities. Dahmen plans to be a business education instructor. Engen and Holcomb will pursue agriculture and special English at Platteville and Whitewater.
