Sheriff probes orchard killings in Yuba City area

Sutter County sheriff Roy Whiteaker said more bodies may be found as deputies wait for irrigation water to recede before resuming searches of peach and plum orchards. The latest discovery followed a string of stabbings and hacks in the area, with 24 victims reported.

Upshur Returns Prisoners After Hanoi Rejection

The U S troopship Upshur with 13 disabled North Vietnamese prisoners of war returned to Da Nang after Hanoi said it would not accept them. Prisoners appeared downcast as they were moved to a Da Nang prison camp from Bien Hoa and will stay there. The ship and 10 gunboats waited off the coast all morning and did not enter the cease fire area off the DMZ.

Funeral Planned in Georgia for Drowned Freeport Man

Funeral services and burial for Kermit Johnson 22 of Freeport Illinois who drowned at Beckmans Lake near Browntown will be held in Macon Georgia. Johnson recently moved to Freeport worked as a program worker for the Freeport Area Church Cooperative and was released from U S military duty five months ago. He disappeared in weed covered lake bottom about 300 feet from shore while swimming with four companions. Coroner ruled accidental drowning no inquest. Rev. Glenn L. Borreson accepted a call to pastor Our Savior's Lutheran Church South Wayne and Jordan Lutheran Browntown. Installation will be Sunday June 6 at 10 30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Rev Eugene Leschensky will perform the rite. Born April 29 1944 in LaCrosse he is a Luther College and Luther Theological Seminary graduate with a son born to Mary Esther Jorgenson in 1967.
