The Monroe City Council annexes Oaktron Industries in Clarno Township about five acres, zoning it light industrial in the Fifth Ward after a public hearing with no comment. Officials plan airport improvements with state and federal funding, seek bids June 12, and reserve 29000 dollars.
Eugene R. Quinn of Monroe will start as Rockford mayor Benjamin T. Schleicher’s administrative assistant on June 16 at a $13 000 annual salary. He brings 17 years with Woodward Governor and has served in Republican party roles in Rockford. He and his wife Carolyn Johnson have three children.
The Clothes Closet of the Woman's Club of Monroe will not be open tomorrow due to an all day winter to summer clothing sort by the Clothes Closet committee. A June afternoon session will be announced to assist summer needs. The closet closes in July and August except for emergencies. It operates rent free in Con Nard Manor in the Commercial and Savings Bank building.
The Hall of History at the New Glarus Swiss Village Museum is completed and open to the public on Friday May 30. A joint Swiss and American effort, the new modern Swiss style hall hosts Textile Printing In The Swiss Canton of Glarus featuring dramatic photos sketches and fabric swatches showing a century of hand weaving in Glarus. Gary Armitage age 18 of Route 1 Albany remains in critical condition at St. Clare Hospital after a Sunday morning crash. He endured nearly five hours of surgery for leg and puncture wounds when his car struck a bridge railing. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Robert Armitage.
Kiwanis Club members will tour the West Clarno Schoolhouse forestry project with talks by Albert Deppeler and Myron Jeglum. The Green County Forestry Education Center Inc. owns the schoolhouse and the 21 acre woodlot donated by Deppeler. Funds of 6100 dollars are sought by shares at 25 dollars each to complete the project.
Music honors announced at Monroe Junior High School by Allan F. Barnard. Three eighth grade band members win University of Wisconsin Summer Music Clinic scholarships worth 40 dollars each, plus a chance to attend July 6 to 13. Names include Benita Benkert Barbara Marty and Cindi Sulzer. Silver and Gold Lyre pins awarded for extensive solo and ensemble credits.
The John H. Greenlee Elevated Tank Service of Cherry Valley Ill. bid 1035 to repair and repaint the water tower, with the village board approving the contract. Other actions include renewing tavern licenses, approving park improvements, property option for a sewage lagoon site, and hiring a new part time police officer.
Twenty Monroe High School seniors were honored at a banquet sponsored by First National Bank of Monroe in the M Room at the high school. Supt. D. J. Huenink welcomed guests as Principal Lee Olsen presided, and Edward M. Adam lauded the students. William E. Branen urged careful, honest pursuit of change and progress, citing Gandhi and Jesus as peaceful leaders.
