Surveyor Sends Striking Photos From Moon Landing
Surveyor 1 achieved a dramatic first-try touchdown on the moon, with televised images showing a smooth, hard surface in the Sea of Storms likely suitable for future descent. The Sea of Storms landing confirms the mission as a milestone for the Apollo program and demonstrates a rocket braking system similar to later spacecraft. The 5:45 am EDT image sequence, using a new TV system, showed a broad, featureless plain with pebbles, pits, small prominences, and some gouging.
