Dane County Judge Michael Torphy ordered action against about 35 demonstrators charged with disorderly conduct after a sit in at Madison Gas and Electric Co. They protested welfare electricity allotments, noting welfare recipients faced disconnections despite payments.
A Milwaukee Road train engine sparked grass fires spreading into grain fields between Black Earth and Middleton Wisconsin. Firefighters from Cross Plains Middleton and Black Earth contained the blazes by 6 pm then fought smoldering ties hours later. Police detained the engine three miles west of Middleton until crews arrived.
Madison continues negotiations to buy an 880 acre farm near Oregon to host a landfill and possibly a 300 foot hill. Engineers from Madison and UW report no progress and no definite plan for a county run dump. Residents are split with a petition of 167 against the landfill, while some residents support the project.
Gov. Patrick Lucey urged President Nixon to appoint Robert Levine of Madison as Wisconsin Selective Service director, replacing Lt. Col. Clinton Knutson. Levine, 59, former chair of the Commission on Human Rights and 1966 Israel Freedom Medal recipient, has 22 years in the draft system and previously served as deputy director and director.
W Jeffrey Smoller, the governor's aide, leads talks between Fox Valley Council of Governments and Northeast Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission. They reach a compromise ensuring no planning area loses funds as federal money for the region remains at stake. Officials Gordon Buboltz and Gilbert Anderson and reps from Oshkosh, Appleton, and other municipalities participate.
A cold front closed Tuesday morning’s sunny skies over Wisconsin and lingered into the day with showers across parts of the state. Temperatures stay cool tonight and Thursday with clear skies and continued cool weather later in the week. Wisconsin Rapids reports 1.08 inches of rain and Ashland records one inch.

The 117th Green County Fair begins in Monroe with judging of swine horses and ponies before 1 p.m. Events run Thursday through Sunday featuring Captain Stubby and His Buccaneers, a tractor pull, All Girl Auto Thrill Show, Charlie Louvin, and a Sunday demolition derby. A 24 member Swiss group from Canton Bern visiting Green County toured New Glarus featuring tours of Washington Town Hall Cheese factory Vögel's Swiss Farm Feldt's beef rations and a noon luncheon at Wilhelm Tell They stayed at New Glarus Woods State Park with local entertainment by the New Glarus Yodelers and Edelweiss Stars before continuing their circuit through the United States The group includes geography language science and math instructors who speak German French and English and is led by Mr and Mrs Erving Dick with Russell Monroe guiding weekend activities
Madison AP two house conference committee restored meat inspectors budgeted at 719000 for 1972 73 and the Grain and Warehouse Commission of Superior port, as part of a series of compromises. They also funded Milwaukee County expressway patrols 935000, rejected closing circuits in Waupaca and Douglas counties, and restored aid to social workers and school psychologists amid a 190 million gap between Luceys plan and the Senate cutbacks.
