The 96th Green County Fair opens tomorrow with free amphitheater amateur acts led by Lyle Rodger who already signed 22 acts including accordionists dancers and one acrobatic act. Judging begins at 8:30 a.m. with junior fair foods and clothing, followed by open class farm products dairy cattle poultry pony classes and more. Jimmy Lynch Death Dodgers perform in the afternoon. Free dancing at the midway pavilion features Freddy Elmer and his Swiss boys tonight and tomorrow.

Gottlieb L. Scherer 90, of 1913 3rd Avenue, died today at 1 a m at St. Clare hospital from a cerebral hemorrhage after illness since March. Born Oct. 15, 1893, in Jordan township, he married Vera Esther Smith Feb. 25, 1915 in Freeport. He made cheese in Stephenson, Lafayette and Green counties before moving to Monroe in 1948. Survived by widow, son Elwood of Browntown, six brothers Jacob Monroe Fred Rockford John Dakota Ill Gottfried Winslow Alfred Seward Ill Otto Freeport and Ernest Mendota NL, and sister Lena Raynaorn Monroe. 53 Polio Cases Reported by Wisconsin Health Board
Wisconsin's poliomyelitis tally for the year reached 53, down from 65 a year earlier. Eleven new cases were reported last week, including two in Milwaukee, Dane, and Racine counties and single cases in Ashland Fond du Lac Green Wood and Rock counties. In Madison six nurses will staff the polio ward at Wisconsin General Hospital, recruited by the Red Cross at the Dane County chapter’s request.
