AP dispatch notes shooting, firebombing and rock throwing at three Negro federal housing complexes in Peoria Illinois after two women were evicted from a project. In separate incidents shotgun blasts wounded three white patrons in two taverns near one project.
A Soviet doctor Yuri Senkevich and American navigator Norman Baker say during the 57 day Atlantic drift with Thor Heyerdahl they did not convert each other politically. Baker from New Rochelle declares he has not become a Communist and Senkevich says he has not become a capitalist. They note they are strong friends and that nationality fades with time.
Mary Brunner, once part of Charles Manson's group, had immunity conditions deemed not fully met and the murder indictment against her dismissed by Superior Court Judge Kathleen Parker. The 26 year old former Eau Claire, Wisconsin resident had been working at the University of Wisconsin library in Madison earlier this year.
SAO PAULO Supreme Court chief asks President Medici to stop off duty police vigilantes blamed for a dozen murders in the past week. Judge Canadiano Garcia de Almeida says this is a test of Brazil’s legal government.
Justice Department will file civil suits against ten companies named by Interior Department for allegedly dumping mercury into lakes and rivers across seven states. Wisconsin is not among the affected states.
Greece said it would honor the pact with Arab hijacker negotiators despite Israel demanding its nullification. Israel called the deal duress and blackmail and urged Greece to ignore the agreement.
Abraham Shiepe Jr. drives a World War II M20 tank around his Los Angeles area yard while the highway patrol blocks its road use. The 25 year old real estate dealer bought the 712 ton vehicle for 2000 at MGM prop auction and reports speeds around 65 mph with gear adjustments. He tests the tank but avoids garage damage amid negotiations.
John Dahman of Argyle won first in wheel Swiss and second in block events at the 114th Lafayette County Fair in Darlington. Judges Glenn Erbe and William Schlinsog named cheese winners from Mt. Horeb Middleton and other Wisconsin producers. Livestock judging for 4 H and FFA began. events include Saddle Club Horsemen Frolic, Fairest of the Fair, and a weekend lineup of horse shows, tractor pulling, talent, and a demolition derby closing Sunday.
Monroe 1158th Transportation Company Wisconsin Army National Guard will conduct weekend maneuvers across Adams Washington and York Townships from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday with colored smoke. 17 trucks 12 2 ton outfits and two jeeps participate. Guardsmen return to the Monroe Armory Sunday for more drills ending at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Ohio Adjutant General disputes Akron Beacon Journal claims about a 10 page FBI summary on the Kent State shootings. The FBI says no conclusions were drawn and the DOJ has the report. Justice officials will keep the file private pending a special grand jury in Portage County.
President Nixon flies west from Andrews Air Force Base bound for meetings in North Dakota and Utah with Republican governors and Mormon Church leaders. The trip includes Fargo for a conference with five upper plains state governors and a Salt Lake City stop. Governor William L. Guy of North Dakota hosts a Democratic governor during the visit.
Mrs. Alvin C. Mandy Rabehl of Monroe will be crowned Wisconsin Queen of Grandmothers during Milwaukee Summerfest on the Lakefront. A bus carrying forty friends will depart 11 a.m. from Monroe for the 3 p.m. ceremony, with Green County officials and local Dairy Queens aboard and sign plans promoting Monroe events for Sept. 19-20.
The Kids From Wisconsin bring 60 instrumentalists and singer dancers to Monroe for the Green County Fair Friday night. They formed under Wisconsin agencies and trained through a three week camp led by Mark Azzolina. The group recently toured fairs with notable Milwaukee State Fair appearances and Chicago convention invitations.
The President and Mrs Nixon visit Salt Lake City meeting the First Presidency and church leaders in the administration building near the Tabernacle. Public motorcades run in Fargo and Salt Lake City following successful stops in St Louis and Louisville. They plan to return to Washington August 3 with a Denver stop to discuss federal aid programs for police and courts.
Milwaukee AP report says James A. Lovell lauds the US space program as productive and creative during Air Age 70 kickoff at Mitchell Field. He notes ongoing shuttle plans, machine benefits, and plans to stay in service two more years, despite doubts about exploration and manned flight.
County treasurer Frank Wyss warns of a last minute rush as almost two thirds of postponed real estate taxes remain unpaid. The final payment date is July 31 with office hours 8 30 a m to 5 p m on weekdays only.
