A French ECA press party toured Monroe meeting local business and farm leaders at a dinner in the Eugene hotel. Dr John A Schindler presided with interpreter Miss Danica Seleskovitch. They praised Monroe Clinic and St Clare hospital and learned about American life and productivity.
The group highlighted Miss Danica Seleskovitch of the French embassy in Washington as busiest interpreter handling rapid questions. Mme Helene Bremond of Progress de Lyon led as the only woman editor, with her resistance-linked husband. Notable visitors included M Comboul of Nice-Matin, Pierre Noton, and E C Hamilton, all sharing insights on publishing and newsprint challenges amid postwar changes.
Robert Frauchiger 41, of Wiota, was struck and killed by lightning at 3 10 p m Saturday on his Lafayette county farm while berry picking with his son Walter eight who was unconscious then and the family dog also died Coroner Joseph Donnelly said the bolt struck the head and traveled through the body to the ground tearing clothes and boots The bolt then ran to a fencepost 50 feet away and plowed a furrow seven inches wide and about six inches deep The son recovered after several hours in the home Frauchiger born Sept 28 1909 leaves a widow Verna Catherine Blum and sons Gene Leroy Walter plus parents three brothers and two sisters Funeral services are set for 1 30 p m tomorrow at Shriner Neushwander Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood cemetery
The ninth polio death of the 1951 Milwaukee outbreak was recorded last night amid three new cases, bringing the metro area total to 92. A year ago at this time there were nine cases and no fatalities.
President Truman told Congress that strengthening the military beyond the 3.5 million goal may be necessary even with Korea peace prospects. He urged full speed ahead on a possible $30 billion annual rise in defense spending, more workers, higher output, and continued inflation controls, noting the interim goal may prove inadequate.
Three accidents were reported to city police Saturday afternoon. Fred Deppler of route 2 struck a parked truck owned by Robert Wenger, also on route 2, in Spring Square parking lot at 1 47 p m causing minor damage. Richard A Eley of 2411 11th Street hit James F Pierce who is on leave from the air force as Pierce backed from a parking place at 2 27 p m on the east side of the square. Pierce was again involved at 5 30 p m when his car was rear ended by William Lengacher of 2023 7th Street.
Guardsmen and a medical platoon returning from Camp Ripley were stranded near Wabasha Minnesota after a washout halted their troop train. The line was freed by a flier and the train backed to Hastings, with meals and milk bought from the depot. Rumors spread of Wisconsin guardsmen called to duty as Minnesota militia. Tenor: a near-tragedy avoided, transit delayed, and local units continued home as high water affected the region.
Marshal Henri Philippe Petain, Verdun icon and wartime figure, died at 2:20 a.m. on Ile d'Yeu where he had been living in exile after his sentence for treason was commuted. His death occurred days after Wilhelm’s passing and ends a dramatic, controversial career.
The 97th county fair rac ing program lists Louis R. Wolleson as president and superintendent of speed. James Bryson Jr of Darlington is the presiding judge with Brooks J. Dunwid die and D K Schroe der as associate judges. Ray Ludwig of Fr Atkinson is the official timer, with Monroe associates George Mauerman and David Cunningham. Nell Cunningham is clerk of the course. Pat Reilly's starting gate will be used. Local horsemen from Elkhorn arrived to train here and will attend Darlington fair events Saturday and Sunday afternoons. D W Baker of Ontario Iowa, veteran horseshoes, is at the stand with two more arriving.
In New York Oils and rails topped a moderate market movement with leading issues gaining just over $2 a share at best. The majority of rises settled between $1 and $2 as the stock market advanced.

Monroe's youth center was closed indefinitely for disciplinary reasons after recent unruly conduct by high school youths. Recreation director Joe E Miller said the building was disturbed by a disorderly crowd and will stay shut until those responsible restore order.
Admiral Forrest P Sherman, 54, chief of naval operations, died in a Naples hotel after two heart attacks. He recently toured Europe’s Atlantic pact area and met with Generalissimo Franco. His body to be flown to the United States after services aboard USS Mt Olympus. President Truman and Secretary Acheson praised him. The Green county herd topped the tri county Black and White show at Leota Park with the Pet Milk trophy for best county group. Exhibitors John W. Ruff and W G Timm of Monroe won grand champion bull and grand champion female as well as multiple class placings among 140 head of Holsteins.
Floods in Vernon Crawford and Richland counties caused the worst toll in state history. Two more members of the Ernest Suller family were found dead in Vernon County as towns Soldiers Grove and Gays Mills suffered severe damage with six to eight feet of water. Red Cross and state agencies mobilized aid while boil water orders and typhoid inoculations were urged.
