The deaths today of a Milwaukee woman and her infant daughter raised Wisconsin’s 1971 highway fatality toll to 520, down from 581 at the same time in 1970. Marinette plans charcoal filtration to remove color taste and odor from drinking water within 30 days due to Green Bay algae.
Gov. Lucey asks W. Jeffrey Smoller to coordinate with Fox Valley COG and NEWRPC to form a new regional planning agency under one roof. A separate note from ImaviDuN reports a bill to publish the state Blue Book after spring odd-year elections.
Circuit Judge Richard Orton ordered Delbert Klingaman reinstated as chief deputy in Richland County with back pay and tenure after the county board grievance committee demotion. The charges of misconduct tied to Klingaman arose after Sheriff Larry Wyman defeated him in the 1970 election for sheriff.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources approved a solid waste disposal site proposed by Kaukauna. The Beaulieu Creek ravine area met technical and legal requirements, with 15 other sites deemed unsatisfactory and objections from petitions noted. The agency said the plan should not create nuisances or pollute waters.

A Madison Moving and Wrecking crew started razing the old Deaconess Hospital on Wednesday. Foreman Marion Books said the work would take two to three weeks once space is cleared. The five man crew led by Al Hawley of Monroe dismantles the brick building floor by floor with a clam bucket, part of Commercial Bank expansion plans. Bricks will be reused for cellar fill and other landfill sites.

A collision between a car carrying the Burris family and a semi-trailer loaded with auto bodies occurred at County Trunk E and EE two miles north of Albany at 7 58 a m. Eight people were injured and transported to St. Clare Hospital. The truck driver Dale T Paffrath 34 of Manitow Wis is the son in law of Mrs Walter Pence a Burris auto passenger. Injuries ranged from lacerations to unknown severities. The Green County Sheriff's Department investigated the crash and cited eastbound movement on EE at the intersection.
Volunteer firemen responded at 5:41 p.m. Wednesday to a fire in a camping trailer in front of Dearth Motors on Highway 11 West. Ronald E. Wold and family from Dubuque were on a camping trip when smoke was detected. Pillows and bedding burned. no other damage. The trailer stayed closed, limiting air for the fire until responders arrived. The Wolds continued their trip near New Glarus. A collision occurred when the trailer tipped onto the car. Albany Fire Department assisted. no additional injuries reported. Sheriff’s officers also investigated a separate one car accident on Trumpy Road at 9:47 a.m. uninjured driver Jack Martin of rural Albany. In Thornbury Ontario, jeweler Henry M. Huss dies at 77.
Sebastian Laeser Sr a longtime Green County cheesemaker celebrated his 90th birthday at Pleasant View Nursing Home with more than 40 relatives at a Sunday dinner. Born July 20 1881 in Canton Aargau Switzerland he moved to America at 29 and worked at several cheese factories before retiring to Monroe.
Governor Lucey names Daniel P. McDonald as Lafayette County Judge to replace the late Joseph Collins who died March 30. John M. McWilliams of Darlington will fill the vacant Lafayette County District Attorney post. Both men bring Marquette University and Wisconsin ties, with military service noted.

A Wednesday 11 21 p m crash on Giese Town Road, 3 3 miles southeast of Juta, involved Donald J Nenneman 33 Brodhead eastbound and Neil J Rufer 21 Brodhead. Nenneman passenger Janet M Nenneman 32 Brodhead reported back soreness but declined medical aid. two other passengers were uninjured. Both vehicles sustained damage and were off the roadway.
