A restated dispatch reports a deadly blast at a Jerusalem hotel, with British Army GHQ named as a target. At least fifty people are killed and sixty injured as the blast shakes the area, prompting widespread mourning and security concerns.
Terrorists struck the King David hotel in Jerusalem destroying the hotel and the Palestine government secretariat. At least 50 people were killed and many injured as troops cordoned streets and searched rubble. A postmaster general was reported killed and an American suffered injuries.
A renewed inquiry into pre war delays in Pearl Harbor defenses is discussed as Sen Brewster notes a stalled earlier probe. The Senate and House committees debated witness access, Wyman and Rohl links, and a 1 million dollar road contract tied to the Canal project in Canada.
Washington reports show the senate war investigating committee intends to recall Joseph Freeman, Washington agent for a midwestern munitions firm, for questioning over alleged witness influence. The panel plans to hear May of Kentucky and other witnesses while seeking extra funds beyond $85,000 for the inquiry.
Leo T. Crowley a former FDIC head and other agency chief endorsed Senator LaFollette seeking reelection on the Republican ticket. He urged Wisconsinites to support LaFollette for his unique qualities and Wisconsin traditions. He called the endorsement a personal tribute with no Washington significance.
Clarence Zimmerman sustained serious head and face injuries when he fell through a hay chute at the Harold Zimmerman farm in Monticello during a weekend visit with his children Annette and Sheldon. He was taken to St. Clare hospital where his condition was reported satisfactory.
Food market controls loosened as the proposed partial revival of OPA allows retroactive pricing to end. Cheese markets show renewed life with Swiss around 45 cents wholesale and cheddar about 40 cents, while bread and pastry costs jump amid higher flour prices. Butter prices surged then cooled as supplies increase, and eating out costs rise 10 to 20 percent though some cafes cut portion sizes. Uncertainty remains due to potential reimposition of controls after August 30 and a new OPA board.
During yesterday’s power outage in Milwaukee a woman called police to complain she could not milk 24 cattle due to no power for her milking machine. The desk officer replied she should return to the old methods she used before the machine.
Wisconsin leaders meet with Gov Goodland to decide on a possible special session to authorize the governor to issue an executive order freezing rents at June 30 levels and deterring evictions. The panel reviews federal rent control moves and a Wisconsin committee report noting no emergency in commercial rents.
Rehearsal for the annual old timers band concert will be 7 to 9 p m Tuesday in the high school band room. A House Senate conference panel agreed price ceilings on meat poultry eggs and milk cannot be restored before August 20 in the OPA revival. Senator Ikley of Kentucky said he does not know if President Truman will sign the compromise but he hopes he will. The Senate Democratic leader accompanied by other party members left the White House today.
Senate Democratic Leader Barkley after meeting with President Truman said Congress will not adjourn before mid next week. He noted Truman is reviewing the OPA revival bill for possible acceptance or veto and that long range housing legislation remains in the House. He did not mention farm security, and atomic energy control bills require Senate-House agreement.
Officials report President Truman has not indicated whether he will sign the proposed price control measure. OPA chief Paul Porter said analysis is underway and a 3 man board will decide on de control or re control for meat dairy grains and oilseeds. Spence called the bill not very effective but the best possible.
Mme Sun Yat sen, widow of the Republic founder, warns the United States against aiding Kuomintang reactionaries seeking civil war. She calls for a united Chinese government, an end to military supplies, and loans only to a representative regime to avoid drawing the U S S R into China’s conflict.
The Yenan radio warned United States marines that searching communist held territory for seven marines seized in North China on July 13 would violate Chinese sovereignty. Indicators suggested the men may be in a village 50 miles southwest of Chinwangtao, but this was not confirmed by the marine corps. Yenan warned of clashes if the hunt continued and demanded an immediate call off.
Freed from wartime restrictions on time travel and shipping, expanded premium lists revive pre war county fair appeal. A. W. Kalbus says fairs start this week with Lafayette county at Darlington opening Friday then Green county a week later. Race horses arrive by motor truck for the Darlington fair as officials predict heightened activity from shows and concessionaires.
State Rep. Raymond J. Snow, 33, Flint Democrat, pleaded guilty to grand jury charges of participation in a 1941 bribe conspiracy to defeat the anti branch banking bill. A first contingent of 24 top Michigan bank officials legislators and industrialists face surrender on the bribery conspiracy warrant.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower boarded a train for Washington after a week in Wisconsin's north woods lakelands. He praised the location for climate and fishing and noted the warmth of northern Wisconsin residents. He posed with 18-year-old Manitowoc resident Jacelene Halverson and autographed items for campers at Camp Manitowish where 168 boys gathered.
Madison reports that John Roach director of the state beverage tax division warned sponsors of picnics festivals and fairs against gambling games awarding merchandise or cash prizes. The warning followed a Lake Mills raid that closed four games with no arrests. Roach said gambling fosters juvenile delinquency while games of skill are not objectionable.
Miss Mamie Bleiler testifies in county court on her $5,000 claim against the George T. Rolph estate. She says a $5,000 Bank of New Glarus certificate, issued March 13 1945 and renewed from earlier gifts, was given to her by Rolph about ten years earlier. Rolph died Aug 23 1945 in New Glarus after an accident at his farm. Estate valued at $19,249.12. J S Urben is administrator.
