The Marine Corps joins the Army in requesting 7 000 draftees in August and 6 000 in September to reach its 204 000 member goal amid declining volunteer rates. The Army raises August and September drafts to 28 000 each as volunteer levels sag.
Directors of the Commercial and Savings bank were renamed at the annual stockholders meeting and will meet tonight to elect officers for the new year. The dinner for stockholders and wives at the Swiss Wheel preceded the session.
A two year old girl Susan Rae Appleman placed a nickel in her mouth and into her throat. She was brought to St. Clare hospital at 11 a.m. to have the coin removed and is in satisfactory condition. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Appleman of Hanover Rock County.
Chicago reports Stanley Amborski a 21 year old private discharged after being smuggled from Fort Leonard Wood Missouri by his parents. He received a medical discharge at Great Lakes Naval Hospital citing bronchial condition. His mother disputes disability denial noting a lung cyst.
Final plans set for the annual Monticello homecoming on Saturday and Sunday led by Commercial club president William Elliott as general chair. The parade starts 11 a.m. Saturday from Main Street north to Railroad Avenue then to the school grounds where prizes are awarded. over 100 units, with New Glarus and Monticello American Legion color guards, four bands, and various divisions. Activities include kittenball, tug o war, concessions, and free attractions. Sunday features a Rockford Roads vs Chicago Raysons game and fireworks to close the program.
Mayor Frank A. Buehler calls a 7 30 p m special council session to decide immediate paving of the Chandler lot and the Monroe Sales Co. lot with hot asphalt. Surface material is ready at the highway 69 resurfacing project. G. E. Zuercher, 12 years on the local school board, was elected the first clerk of Joint Common School District No. 1 of Monroe at the organization meeting. He previously served as secretary. three-year terms were given to Zuercher Rodney O. Kittelsen and Mrs. Perle G. Guess. The board, with all members present except Herbert T. Johnson, handled routine business. Herman A. Stuessy reported on Lincoln school grading and paving, North school playground work, and fuel problems. Bids for fuel oil for East and South school plants were authorized.
Assemblyman Martin O Monson 66 of Lafayette county was severely injured May 30 in a farm mishap and has begun sitting up in a chair at St. Clare hospital. He suffered a compound fracture of the lower leg and pelvic fractures when he fell against a bulldozer tread operated by Willis Schiller Monroe while clearing land west of Wiota.
Torrential overnight rains up to 7.75 inches caused widespread flooding across Kansas districts with Marion and Strong City submerged. The Cottonwood river swelled uprooting residents, forcing boat rescues, power outages, and National Guard flood duty in six cities including Topeka and Manhattan.
The strangled body of seven year old Christine Butcher was found near Windsor park close to Sugar Ray Robinson's training camp after she vanished from a crowd outside the gym where he prepared to fight Randolph Turpin. Two Windsor visitors locating her body in long grass beside the Thames.
In New York federal court Judge Vincent L. Leibel refused to revoke bonds or place 16 communist leaders in custody while bail is reviewed. The government sought to raise bail to 875000 and revoke 171000 posted by the civil rights congress, with continued litigation over bail sources tied to a broader conspiracy case and flight of four top conspirators.
Dr. Walter C. Reineking 70 of Jacksonville Illinois died at Madison General Hospital after a two car crash near Verona yesterday. He formerly led Lake View sanatorium 1930 to 1941 and recently worked at Oak View sanatorium Jacksonville. He rode with his son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs George W Simmons Jr of Silver Spring Maryland and two grandchildren when their car collided with a car driven by George Brager of Horeb at the intersection of county trunk PB and M about two miles south of Verona.
Staff Sergeant Jacob Kummer 20, of the 7th division, arrived home on rotation from a nine month Korea tour. He helped Marines north of the 38th parallel after Inchon and served with the 31st Field Artillery Battalion. Kummer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kummer, Route 2, joined Aug. 23, 1948 and trained at Fort Knox. He will report for reassignment at Fort Sheridan.
Guardsmen of Co. K with the 32nd Wisconsin division report two weeks of summer maneuvers at Camp Ripley Minnesota. Early mornings start with reveille, rifle drills, and dry runs followed by range work. Food and lodging noted. mosquitoes are a complained factor. Captain Howard Counselman faces arranging airplane rides before camp ends.
June 30 1951 call reports from First National and Commercial and Savings show higher deposits and loans versus 1950. Total deposits reached 15 261 312 78 with First National at 9 629 715 25 and Commercial at 5 631 597 70. Loans totaled 5 085 523 89 with Commercial at 3 287 147 65 and First National at 1 798 376 24.
Milwaukee reports 55 polio cases for the season with two new infections today and five deaths so far. A year ago at this time there were six cases and no deaths.
Newark Ohio Kilgore Manufacturing Co faces a 9000 count federal indictment over a 1950 munitions blast in South Amboy New Jersey that killed 31 and caused 10 million dollars in damage. If convicted on all counts fines could reach 90 million dollars. The indictment alleges violations of interstate commerce commission rules by packing detonators with munitions.
John S Zweifel 82 of New Glarus died today at 4 a m after a stroke six weeks earlier. He was born March 24 1869 in New Glarus township, married Barbara Streiff Nov 29 1888, and the couple lived on a farm west of the village until 1923. Funeral Friday at 2 p m at the Swiss Evangelical and Reformed church with Rev W J Stuckey officiating. burial in the church cemetery. The body is at Zentner funeral home.
Streets department workers report basements and yards at Goetz acres and in the east city were flooded over the weekend after a cloudburst of more than five inches. Light showers continued yesterday and today with forecasts calling for occasional showers tomorrow.
