A United Airlines Viscount turboprop crashed in the Great Smoky Mountains foothills near Newport Tennessee killing 39 aboard. The Philadelphia to Huntsville flight had stops in Washington and Knoxville before vanishing in a wooded hollow at 6 15 p m. Witnesses reported a explosion and falling debris while authorities began a federal investigation.

Pastor Accepts Call to Monroe United Church of Christ
Rev. Calvin Paul Fischer of Merrill has officially notified St. John s United Church of Christ that he accepted the call to become senior Monroe pastor on Sept 1. Youth Saves Crash Victim Near Beaver Dam
A 24 year old Carolyn Berndt of Juneau was trapped in an overturned burning car six and a half miles south of Beaver Dam on Dodge County Highway S. Gerald Braker aged 19 freed her before the gasoline tank exploded and suffered minor burns. Berndt was in critical condition at St Marys hospital Milwaukee. The crash occurred at 240 am when the car left the road struck a culvert and flipped. Braker woke from sleep and rushed to cut the seat belt and pull her free.
