AP dispatches report a Viet Cong ambush near Da Nang in which nine American paratroopers were killed and seven wounded after a day-long engagement with the 101st Airborne Division. The clash involved heavy small arms fire and air support, continuing for about seven hours until nightfall.
In a July meeting at the courthouse the Green County Board transferred 45000 from the general fund to acquire an acre in Decatur for a county highway equipment storage garage shared with Brodhead and Decatur townships. If statutes permit, the building may be county owned with a lease to the towns. otherwise it would be built by Green County Highway Department and partly leased. The facility will replace former sites and store machinery gasoline and salt, with the county’s share around 20000. A state 4775 check was acknowledged for land near Green County Hospital Turn to No. 2. On the back page, 200 entries are planned for the Wisconsin Championship Black and White Show set for Tuesday in Monroe, with 250-300 entries expected.
Brown Swiss breeders from Green and Lafayette counties will hold the Canton 2 Show at Mineral Point fairgrounds after the Darlington site flooded. About 85 cattle and 20 exhibitors are expected with junior and open show classes starting around 10 a.m. A canton queen is chosen at noon and will compete later at the July 27 state picnic at Narrows Valley Farm.
Coleman Puppet Theater presents a six act marionette version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at 8:30 PM in the Junior High Auditorium. Park officials changed venue due to weather concerns. admission is free and first come seating.
Audiences attend two evenings of laughter July 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. in Monroe Junior High Auditorium for Pure As the Driven Snow and A Working Girl's Secret. Four Monroe Junior High School vocal students Lynn Milestone Brian Brugger Paul Stiles and Mary Joy Rieder are attending chorus sessions of the Junior Music Clinic on the University of Wisconsin Campus Madison on scholarships funded by proceeds from the school operetta.
Earl J. Wiehl of the Wisconsin AAA announces Monroe will receive a Pedestrian Protection Program award. Mayor Walter R. Ekum and Chief Dwight Coplien will accept at the police station at 9 30 a m on July 17.
Six Monroe Boy Scouts plus peers from 23 nations head to Farragut State Park Idaho for the 17th National Jamboree. Local attendees include Bob Gordee Jay Meythaler Tom Zupanc John Zupanc Paul Urban and John Bauman of Troops 113 and 114. They depart Monroe at 5 30 a m Saturday July 12 for Greater Rockford Airport.
Two separate accidents injuring three people were reported by the Sheriff's Department. Dennis D. Gilbertson, 17, Monroe, and Ronald D. Leck, 16, were hurt when Gilbertson’s car left a highway, hit a ditch and objects before rolling over. Both were taken to St. Clare Hospital. A second crash near Monroe involved Herman A. Tschudy, 18, Route 1, skidding and striking a fence. he suffered a head cut.
Gene Baker of Wad sworth Illinois was hospitalized with a cracked neck vertebra and neck ligament injuries after diving into Whitewater Lake during a Fourth of July vacation. He is improving at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan and may be released in about a week if his condition continues to improve.
Guardsmen from the Monroe area will depart the Monroe Armory at 5:30 a.m. Saturday for a two week training camp at Camp McCoy Wisconsin. An advance party leaves Thursday in two trucks and a car. The roster lists 30 plus personnel from the 1158th Transportation Company and associated platoons with units and home towns across Wisconsin.
Twin girls born to Mr and Mrs Dennis Sedwick Route 2 Winslow at St. Clare Hospital Tuesday morning marking the fourth twin birth at the hospital this year. The Sedwicks first daughters join brothers Daniel, Bradley, and Teresa in the family.
