Traffic Deaths Hit New Records During July Fourth Weekend
The Associated Press reports a summer holiday traffic toll set new records during the Independence Day period. Total deaths rose beyond 500, surpassing 491 in 1950, with waterside losses adding to the all time high for any holiday. Homeward traffic remained the heaviest in history, while the hourly fatality rate fell to two or three as the period ended.
