Double fatal crashes raise Wisconsin highway death toll

A double fatality in Ozaukee County and the death of a pedestrian push Wisconsin's 1971 highway toll to 430, against 498 on the same date a year earlier. Marshall Howard, 4, of Park Ridge Illinois and Forest Luckett, 63 of Chicago died in a collision two miles west of Port Washington on US 141. Douglas Mtzler 19 of Madison died from injuries after being struck on US 51 near Stoughton Thursday night.

Hudson Fourth of July rock festival canceled

Hudson police sought state and county reinforcements after the Hudson Booster Club canceled a weekend Fourth of July rock festival. Chief David Burke warned that early news of the cancellation might not circulate, and he requested alert status for as many as 1,000 officers and deputies if needed.

The Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations reports Wisconsin May seasonal rural industry employment down 28 percent from a year earlier. Agricultural field work drops 44 percent to 1204. food processing workers fall 22 percent to 2499. plant employed field workers decline 10 percent to 859. Ninety one percent of May workers are Wisconsin residents, up from 88 percent last May, with most out of state workers in agricultural fields.
