New Figures Show Wisconsin Reliance on Income Tax

The Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance reports 1961 state tax collections. about 46 percent came from income tax. Only New York and Oregon exceeded Wisconsin in income tax share among states. The 2 percent starting rate and 10 percent top rate were set by the 1961 law.

Justice Department officials said Spy Robert A. Soblen is not in good shape and will not be flown to the United States soon from a British hospital. Earlier statements had indicated a late today or early Tuesday arrival, but his condition now delays the return.

Monroe’s Family Night activities shift from Recreation to Twining Park for Wednesday with a 6 30 p.m. games start a City Band concert at 8 p.m. and dusk fireworks by Chamber of Commerce. Pool hours 1 to 7 p.m. and croquet golf featured at Recreation Park tomorrow. Attendance 18 903 this season, below last year’s 21 629 but improving.

Nuclear Shot Set for Fourth of July Blast at Johnston Island

Honolulu dispatch reports the United States will attempt to detonate its largest atmospheric nuclear shot in the Pacific series. The test is planned for Wednesday night over Johnston Island with timing between 4 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. EST, conducted by Joint Task Force 8 at Johnston and Christmas Island.

Monroe drummer tops UW session at Madison clinic

Kristine Brugger of Monroe was chosen as first chair drummer at the University of Wisconsin music clinic in Madison. She led a drum ensemble recital and joined three Monroe band students in Saturday concerts, with Susan Reger and Mary Nussbaum also returning from the session. Judy Winger and Barbara Frantz were vocal pupils in the training. High school students were set to begin another clinic today on campus.

Convicts Try Death Row Break at San Quentin

Six condemned murderers escaped a chaotic assault on death row at San Quentin before guards overwhelmed them with steel, tear gas, and a shotgun seized from officers. Two guards were struck but survived, and the six were placed in solitary confinement after the failed breakout.

The 18 year old, daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Zee, succeeds an Albany winner and plans beauty school after graduation. The event featured speeches by Robert C. Zimmerman and a county parade with nine queen candidates, bands, floats, and a water fight.

Belmont Youths Hurt in Mishap

Four rural Belmont youths were hospitalized after a two car collision three miles south of Belmont on Highway 126. Mary Ann Ludlum 19 Tom Ludlum 16 Karen Knebel 20 Jack Knebel 18 in fair condition. Larry Ludlum 19 driver treated and released. Bill Riechers rural Belmont driver treated and released. Authorities say Ludlum vehicle crossed onto the highway and was hit broadside.

Nelson Says Wisconsin Reapportionment Plan Gerrymandering

Rainfall Brings Relief as Wisconsin Senses Steady Rain

Area farmers welcomed a soaking rain totaling 2.64 inches overnight and into morning across southern and central Wisconsin. No crop emergencies yet, but conditions improve.
