Army insurgents claimed to depose Milton Obote after hours of heavy fighting and said power would be handed to the soldiers. The 4 p.m. Radio Uganda broadcast announced the coup in Kampala.
Six day countdown begins at Cape Kennedy as Saturn V teams complete final physicals for astronauts. Test Supervisor Henschel starts clock from 102 hours as launch sequence proceeds with confirmation of readiness. In Washington Stevens Pass avalanche kills four and injures six including a 12 year old Seattle girl Peggy Dean.
Burglars entered nine southwestern Wisconsin schools starting in Fennimore and moving north to Viroqua. About 300 dollars was taken from Fennimore High School. other raids hit Prairie du Chien Eastman Seneca Gays Mills Soldiers Grove Viroqua and Liberty Pole. Three schools in Dubuque Iowa were also entered.
Atty. Gen. Robert W. Warren told a Monroe audience that despite high affluence and progress, Americans still doubt the future. He warned about urban congestion housing and pollution as population growth accelerates and urged citizen and legislative action to enforce environmental laws.
North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops shelled Phnom Penh airport and attacked defense perimeters while U S cargo planes delivered arms. Guards fought near the runway end as mortars and rockets hit the military section. no damage reported. The assault followed a previous four day ago strike.
State Senator Gordon W. Roseleip sponsors a bill to end county liens on recipients of old age assistance so retirees keep homes free and clear. The measure would let counties seek repayment from the recipient's estate after death with priority among limited claims.
Commerce Clearing House reports new withholding tax rules for calendar months beginning after January 31. Employers with $2000 or more in withheld taxes at quarter end must deposit within three banking days. Smaller firms with $200 or more in a month deposit by the 15th of the following month. Quarterly returns remain required. very small employers under $200 monthly are exempt from monthly deposits.
United States involvement in Cambodia drew sharp dissent from Sen. George D. Aiken and Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield. Mansfield urged public hearings on Nixon's limits, while Aiken warned against overreach. Critics cited air power and possible violation of the Cooper Church Amendment as observers noted troop advisers' presence. Secretary Rogers said air support would continue to protect remaining South Vietnamese and U.S. troops.
