County Board to decide jail remodel or new building
The County Board likely will decide at the February session whether to remodel the present jail or pursue a new structure in the north end of town. Jail committee chair Louis Wolleson noted plans by Alvin F. Rote Co and potential cost estimates of $97,220 for remodeling or $221,000 for a new building.

Seven Air Crash Victims Rescued By Navy Transport
Seven survivors from a twin engined Navy amphibian forced down in the Central Pacific were rescued and en route to Pearl Harbor aboard the transport Fred C. Ainsworth. The men, all in good condition, were picked up from an air dropped lifeboat about 665 miles north of Kwajalein after engine trouble. The crew included Lt. James Goffray Measel pilot and other officers and enlisted aviation crew members from Norfolk VA St Paul MN Watertown MA Buffalo NY Warwick IL and Detroit MI. They were spotted by a Coast Guard plane after a large multi unit search spanning 45 000 square miles.

Funeral eulogizes Fred J. Bolender at Universalist rite
The 86 year old Fred J. Bolender was eulogized this afternoon at Shriner Neushwander funeral home. Rev. James L. Neighbours spoke on his life devotion to family church and Universalist philosophy. Masonic burial rites were conducted at Greenwood cemetery by Smith lodge with Olin Flistam as chaplain and pallbearers named. Out of town mourners included several Bolender relatives from Madison Richland Center Rockford Brodhead and Winnetka plus others from La Rose Plymouth and Oakwood corners.

Anesthetic Blast Kills Mrs. Doke at UW Hospital
