In a State of the Union message Truman argues for a fair wage structure to support conversion and expansion while warning voices of disunity must not prevail. He says higher wages fuel better markets, urging peaceful labor management and noting government can aid by public opinion and machinery to reduce strikes.
The Associated Press reports a 750000 CIO Steel Workers strike idling a large share of U S industry bringing total idle in labor disputes to 1600000. Officials consider seizure of major meat packing plants a possible government response amid 263000 CIO AFL workers strike. Pack houses seek 17 to 20 cent hourly raises and a 36 weekly minimum, while major packers offer 10 cent increases.
President Truman asked Congress to extend subsidies beyond June 30 to prevent higher meat and dairy costs and avert tougher inflation. He warned withdrawal could raise meat by 3 to 5 cents a pound and butter by 12 cents, with milk bread sugar and cheese also rising.
