Fishing Slated For New Lake In 66 Season

Wisconsin officials announced plans to stock the 74 acre Zanders Lake near Browntown with panfish largemouth bass and northern pike once flooding and dike work are completed. If the basin fills by spring adult pike may be stocked for a natural spawn, or fingerlings may be added later. options include diverting fish from the upper lake to jumpstart fishing.

Madison Council OKs Weaver for HUD Secretary post

The Madison City Council approved a resolution Thursday night congratulating Robert Weaver, named by President Johnson to head the Housing and Urban Development Department. Weaver would be the first Negro nominated to the Cabinet.

Conservation League approves 1966 tree shrub program

Green County Conservation League directors vote to continue the tree and shrub program for 1966. Free trees and shrubs will be available in April with limits on trees per applicant. Becket president notes last year’s 226 tree orders. Planting instructions and films planned for spring and watershed meetings.

Ten Men Lift Car To Free Injured Girl

Milwaukee police say ten neighbors lifted an automobile off 13 year old Mary Bailey who was struck and dragged 40 feet by the car driven by her mother Mrs Earl Bailey. Mary suffered a fractured pelvis and was reported in fair condition.

Suspects Shot By Staked-Out Police in Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills police killed two would be kidnap suspects during a stakeout at the home of Leonard K Firestone. Pistols raised, the men crashed the residence and were shot with shotguns as they rushed the living room. One suspect died instantly and the other died later at General Hospital. Police recovered three guns and said the men planned to demand 2 million dollars. The undercover operation ended three weeks of work after a tip from an undisclosed source. Firestone 58 was warned to leave the city and praised the police for their actions.

Rufener Hurt After 12 Foot Fall From House Roof

Armin Rufener 52 of Route 3 suffered a skull fracture yesterday afternoon when he fell about 12 feet from a house addition onto a cement sidewalk. His brother Jacob Rufener Jr. on a ladder below broke the fall and was shaken. No condition report is available today but he regained consciousness last night.

Free Dinner Rolls for First Time Blood Donors in Monticello

Mrs. Permin Graber of rural Monticello announces in The Mail bag of The Monroe Evening Times a program offering first time blood donors a loaf of homemade bread. The Red Cross mobile unit will be at Fellowship Hall Monticello Monday 1 to 4 p.m. operated by Albany Circle with a quota of 50 pints for Monticello and surrounding townships. This marks Green County’s first 1966 bloodmobile visit.

Beloit College Ends Ford Foundation Challenge Drive Early

Beloit College wrapped up the Ford Foundation Challenge drive more than six months ahead of schedule. President Miller Upton told the Board of Trustees the college has received 5,096,580 dollars in cash gifts since June 1963, including 3,496,580 raised by the college and a 1.6 million Ford Foundation challenge grant.
