Monroe Alderman Evan C. Chambers launches a home ballot poll with T. J. Burgy Jr. to gauge public opinion on building a police fire station. Byrnes Transfers MGIC Stock to Scholarship Inc

Rep John Byrnes and his wife transferred ownership of all their Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corp stock to Scholarship Inc a Green Bay non profit foundation. The move follows his Nov 21 House floor pledge after disclosure of a prior preferential price. 966 shares were sold for 24 580 net with 22 280 benefiting the foundation and 2 300 reimbursed to Byrnes.

1914 Monroe fire tests firemen at four story blaze

A January 13 1914 fire in Monroe destroyed the old Miller Mfg Co building and damaged nearby properties including the Green County Herald causing relocation. The blaze spread from the Karlen and May garage and tested the volunteer fire department before the site was rebuilt as Monroe Sales Co quarters housing autos silos and farm equipment.

Anna Clark widow of Dr. R B Clark dies at 99 after hospitalization since December 3 in St. Clare hospital. Born Aug 7 1864 in Du buque County Iowa she lived in Monroe since 1894 with ties to the First Universalist church and DAR chapter. Funeral services set at Shrin er Neushwander with burial in Greenwood.

Girl Scout Fair Planned Feb 8 at Monroe Armory

Dimes Airlift Set for Sunday at Monroe Airport

The March of Dimes Penny-A-Pound Airlift will be held Sunday at the new Monroe air port east of Highway 59 starting 8:30 a.m. with planes flying until dusk weather permitting. Nine planes and 16 pilots will participate aided by Hughes Mobile Homes headquarters trailer and Civil Defense auxiliary police. All proceeds go to the March of Dimes.

City Plans Remodeling to House Civil Defense Communications

The City Council authorized about 300 to remodel a basement room in City Hall for Civil Defense communications. A mobile generator will move to the city garage and a fire wall will seal the area from the boiler room. Theodore Weiss urged the move citing safety and city ownership of equipment. About 800 in new units will arrive, raising total city-owned communications value to nearly 3,000. The plan includes training three to four radio operators and adding cabinets for foul-weather gear. Attendees included Mayor Evans and several council members.
