President Eisenhower proposed bringing 10 million more Americans under social security, raising benefits, and increasing the taxable income base to 4 200 dollars. He outlined a six point program covering coverage, retirement earnings, benefit levels, tax base, fairer benefit computation, and disability protections.
In Warren Pennsylvania Judge Allison Wade, 51, was shot twice in his courtroom by Norman Moon 26 of Connellsville after Moon faced him on a non support charge. Moon then attempted suicide but survived and was charged with murder.
Harold L. Jacobs proprietor of Lee's store was injured Tuesday night in a traffic accident near Palm Springs California. He is in a Palm Springs hospital with non serious injuries. A woman reported injured in the crash may have died. Jacobs was en route from a business trip to Los Angeles to Phoenix Arizona where he and his wife had moved for health reasons last August. He returned for the Christmas shopping period in December.
Anna Wolter 93 of 1748 16th Street died 1 20 PM at St Clare hospital after Dec 29 admission from old age complications and pneumonia. Born in Switzerland she leaves daughter Mrs Clarke Bechtolt Route 4 two sons William Monroe and Albert Winneconne and three sisters Mrs Anglia Peabody Albany Mrs Mary Babler Renwick Ia and Mrs Kay Pinnow near Oshkosh. Services pending at Stuessy funeral home.
Indian Lt Gen K S Thimayya announced custodial troops will return unrepatriated Korean War prisoners to Allied and Communist captors next Wednesday morning, acting alone and treating them as prisoners not civilians. The move involves 22,000 North Koreans and Chinese, 21 Americans, 1 Briton, and 325 South Koreans who refused repatriation.
In Rockford Illinois Most Rev Raymond P Hillinger was installed as the fourth Catholic bishop of Rockford at St James pro cathedral. A crowd of 700 attended as Hillinger leads about 79000 Catholics across 11 counties with Cardinal Stritch and 18 archbishops and bishops present for the ceremony and his first Pontifical Mass.
A light snow or freezing drizzle is forecast for the Monroe area tonight following a day of warmer weather. Fog and mist earlier today preceded a reading just above freezing at noon with a low of 25 tonight and a high of 35 tomorrow.
Former President Harry S. Truman was uninjured in an icy morning collision on the Paseo in Kansas City. A second driver, 18-year-old John C. Mayall, also escaped unharmed after his car struck Truman’s left front wheel while turning left.
Detroit prosecutors won a 15 day postponement in the pre trial examination of Carl Renda in the Walter Reuther shooting case. Key witness Donald Ritchie refuses extradition from Windsor Ontario, hindering the case. Renda is free on 25000 bond. Ritchie and accomplice Betty White were captured in Preston Ontario after eluding an international search. Prosecutor O'Brien hints Ritchie could plead guilty and testify.
Madison dairy market reports barely steady activity with fair to good demand. Prices listed include single daisies 38 14 40, long horns 38 44 40 34, square prints 39 12 41 44, midgets 39 4 42 14.
Senators debated a bill to authorize U S participation with Canada in the St. Lawrence seaway project. Wiley hinted at a switch by an eastern senator and noted several converts as a two vote margin looms for passage. Canada would finish its portion, while the U S would fund 105 million dollars via bonds and tolls. President Eisenhower backs the measure for security and economic reasons.
A four engine Philippine airline DC-6 crashed near a large Rome apartment building after attempting to land at Ciampino from Beirut. Sixteen aboard were killed with seven passengers and nine crew reported. co pilot William Rose of Alton, Illinois named. The plane exploded after failing to land and caught fire in a field.
The House Ways and Means Committee approved major cuts in personal taxes on dividend income. Revenue loss is projected at 240 million dollars in the first year and up to one billion as the program expands. An 8 day old boy died early today after his Jehovah's Witness parents refused a blood transfusion on religious grounds. The couple Thomas Grzyb and Barbara Grzyb aged 20 and 18 faced Family Court action to declare them unfit and place the infant under court guardianship. The case followed a hospital report that the child had required a transfusion since birth and remained in shock after Tuesday surgery for an abdominal obstruction.
Detroit reports the Nash Motors Co and Hudson Motor Car Co merger is expected to win director approval today. Directors met and were said to be finalizing the agreement though stockholder approval remains. George W. Mason of Nash would be board chairman with A. E. Barit of Hudson as president of the merged company.
Mrs. Dorothy Tschudy testifies about years of trying to adopt Baby Jeffrey. Dr. M G Peterman of Milwaukee and Columbia hospitals, and attorney Oscar Toebaas question her, as evidence includes letters to the Welfare Department, an insurance policy, and cost lists. The trial, before Judge Elton J. Morrison, continues with no immediate ruling.
