Lt Streiff led a platoon under heavy fire to break through enemy positions after an initial failure. He directed air and artillery support, rode with the hatch open to observe and fire, and his actions destroyed eight anti-tank guns five machine guns and 40 enemy troops while returning to safety with minimal casualties inspiring his forces and preserving critical ordnance material.
City moves toward a snow enforcement ordinance with strict penalties and towing fees. A proposed city garage at the west edge of town aims to free parking near the square by replacing the existing southwest corner garage. City Clerk G Soseman and City Attorney Arthur C Benkert were tasked with finalizing details while meter funds are restricted to maintenance and parking facilities.
Edward S Schmitz longtime Manitowoc County judge and attorney, serving 83 years in the area. He held the county bench from 1887 to 1948 and also served as city attorney and district attorney in Manitowoc.

Jesse Schroeder, 79, of Juda, Wisconsin died at 5 p m yesterday at St Clara hospital after major surgery and a six month illness. He lived at the A J Schroeder home 1806 17th avenue since fall. Born January 1 1871 he was the son of Charles and Hannah Wolfe Schroeder. He attended Oakley schools never married and worked in the Juda area most his life. Survived by one brother Elmer Watertown S D and one sister Mrs Eston Brown Chester S D who cannot attend due to age illness. Preceded by four parents two sisters and one brother Ernest who died in 1949 at Snohomish Washington. Active in Evangelical United Brethren church in Juda. Funeral arrangements by Stuessy funeral home pending arrival of his bio. funeral will be in Tada Evangelical United Brethren church with Rev Nathan Bartel officiating. Madison reports Harry W. Harder, 45, appointed commissioner of taxation by Governor Kohler to fill the vacancy left by Arthur Wegner who resigned to become the governor’s financial secretary. The term runs to Aug. 1 and requires Senate confirmation. Harder, director of the corporate income tax division, is a University of Wisconsin graduate and has served in the department since January 1937.
A major fire and explosion at a 76 year old brick and concrete structure on North LaSalle Street killed four Chicago firemen and injured four others. Firemen battled the blaze for more than five hours as flames towered 100 feet high and smoke filled downtown tunnels. The blaze started in the basement or first floor around 2 p.m. an explosion on the fourth floor blew out a long wall, trapping and injuring crews. Officials hoped all occupants escaped as 68 pieces of equipment and two fireboats fought the flames watched by thousands of spectators.
Hazy cloudy skies persist with light rain and snow possible tonight. Temperatures may rise to the upper 30s tomorrow after a 36 degree peak today at 1 p m. Snow, rain and hail hit Monroe briefly around 2 a m with additional snow at Bara Boo and sleet in Madison and South Wayne this morning. Southwest winds boosted today’s temps but lows tonight should hover near 26.
President Truman signed a civil defense bill authorizing about 3.1 billion dollars for air raid construction and home front defense outlays. He said Congress will be asked to provide initial cash to start the program and that matching grants will help states build air raid shelters. The defense rests primarily on state and local governments. Tokyo dispatch reports Captain Ben L. Tufts of Crystal Falls Michigan has earned a Bronze Star with a first bronze oak leaf cluster.
A Manhattan corporation and 204 persons were indicted on charges of conspiracy to use the GI bill to defraud the government of almost $300000. Five principals and Garford Laboratories Inc were charged with fraudulently obtaining $66000 from the Veterans Administration for tuition and supplies. The principals include Ora W Grow Cassie Grow Abelardo Martinez Victor J Triolo and Vincent L Puma. Veterans enrolled under VA educational programs mostly never attended classes, with the school receiving fees and supplies while veterans drew subsistence checks.
Dodgeville resident Charles Hendrickson, 32, pleaded guilty to first degree murder for the early morning shooting of Charles B. Exley, 54, night clerk at the Higbee hotel. Hendrickson, held without bond, confessed in Madison and faces sentencing by Town County Circuit Court Judge A. W. Kopp.

Senator Taft called the U N cease fire in Korea complete appeasement and favored US troop withdrawal over agreement with the Chinese communists. House members urged withdrawal while Democrats and Republicans prepared speeches for next week's Senate debate on international issues. North Dakota Senate backed a withdrawal resolution urging Congress and the president to act.
Frances co Cardinal Marchetti-Selvagiani, 79, deacon of the Roman Catholic college of cardinals, died today in Vatican City. A Rome native, he received the red hat in 1930 and served as deacon and dean of the college, vicar general for Rome, secretary of the Holy Office, and prefect of the Ceremonial Congregation. His death raises cardinal vacancies to 19.
Schindler C Schindler, 57, died when a tractor tipped after he aided a friend whose car was stuck in snow. The accident happened near his home on a county trunk southeast of here.
U N diplomats report Russia will abstain or abstain from voting on the second Korean cease fire appeal to China Peiping. The move would clear the way for Peiping to accept the proposal if it so desires. Delegates had doubted a truce earlier as Peiping rejected prior efforts.
President Truman will outline the administration's spending and taxing proposals in a Monday message to Congress on the federal budget. Advance talk centers on roughly 70 million dollars for defense in the new fiscal year starting July 1. He indicated that new taxes totaling well over four billion dollars annually would be needed, with eight billion dollars cited as the two tax boosts' impact. Rep. Doughton noted that doubling the amount would be even greater.
