He is a team chief in the unit having entered the Army in May 1953 and previously assigned to the 35th Field Artillery Battalion at Fort Riley. He was formerly a telegrapher for the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad.

Anthony Staikos of Matawan Township admitted kidnapping a 16-year-old Yonkers boy in a bid to obtain 100000 dollars. The arrest followed a manhunt after the youth, Joel Katz, escaped his bonds.
