American novelist Sinclair Lewis died in Rome at age 65 after bronchial pneumonia and heart inflammation. A Sauk Centre native, he wrote Main Street and Elmer Gantry, won the 1930 Nobel Prize, and published World So Wide before his death in Italy where he favored writing and his second wife Dorothy Thompson. His son Wells was killed in World War II. Michael studied drama in London.
