In Washington J Edgar Hoover notes more fugitives located more organized crime figures convicted and more fingerprints checked in 1970 while warning of rising violence including hijackings and police killings by black militants. Hoover cites 468 organized crime convictions in 1970 up from 319 in 1969.
Senator Robert J. Dole confirmed as President Nixon's choice to head the Republican National Committee in Washington. He said GOP opposition had waned and his main task is to help re-elect Nixon in 1972.
Seven year old Steve Fleener from Bargersville near Indianapolis will undergo open heart surgery next month to repair a ventricular defect. A community fundraising drive, supported by schoolmates and local widows, has raised about 10 thousand dollars to cover medical costs and travel, with Hoosiers across the state contributing. A surgeon described the defect as a hole between the heart's two ventricles to be patched with synthetic cloth.
The Mass Transit Subcommittee of the Legislative Council Highway Committee endorsed increases in auto and motorcycle license fees to raise about 10.8 million dollars annually. Proposed additions would raise auto fees by 5.85 dollars and motorcycle fees by 2 dollars, from current levels of 18.15 and 5 dollars respectively.
Milwaukee Journal reports George Allen, fired by the Los Angeles Rams, has been offered a combined coach and general manager post with the Green Bay Packers and a similar package with the Washington Redskins. Allen has Wisconsin ties and did not reject Green Bay’s proposal, declining to comment.
Phi Kappa Sigma at Northwestern University was ordered closed by its national alumni association. Thirty members were told to vacate the chapter house by Tuesday as the group opposed antiwar activity and plans to open the fourth floor to female tenants. The fraternity previously housed antiwar organizing and served as headquarters during a student strike tied to Cambodia operations and the Kent State deaths.
Evans, a longtime Monroe city employee who retired Thursday, was honored by the Monroe Common Council with a read resolution and a tie clasp memento. The council praised his unselfish service and wished him well in retirement while also noting Mrs. Evans’ support during his illness.
Mrs. Anna Legler Kundert of New Glarus will turn 95 on Tuesday January 12. Born in New Glarus she descends from Swiss colonists including her grandfather and father. She is one of 11 siblings with a Denver brother and has lived in New Glarus most of her life. She resides at the New Glarus Home and is known for her memory and activity. She was widowed in 1945 after marrying Baltz Kundert in 1897.
A sewer line break at the Monroe Junior High around 3 p.m. Tuesday flooded a restroom area. William Stuckey, the school system business manager, said pumps were shut off, use of the restroom stopped, and repair was expected the same day.
A 3 05 p m Tuesday two vehicle crash on Highway 11 81 near Judo left Martin Hazuka 18 with facial lacerations and taken to St. Clare Hospital while Michell Wuetrich 18 of Monroe faced heavy damage to both cars Hazuka's condition described as satisfactory. In a separate incident at 1015 a m Tuesday Andrew Bell backing from a Monroe driveway collided with Paul Johansen driving east on CT 6 near Brodhead due to slippery roads both vehicles sustaining moderate damage.
The Monroe Park and Recreation office issued 26 shelter house permits for reunions and family gatherings over two days with an estimated attendance of 1365. Recreation Park sees peak demand with both shelters filled on seven Sundays and no vacancies on several summer dates. Reservations open January 4 with a one dollar fee. no charge for use of the shelter.
President Nixon, at the California White House, sharpens a new State of the Union address aimed at the 92nd Congress. He reiterates dissatisfaction with Congress for failing to act on welfare reform and revenue sharing while pledging cooperation and signaling upcoming administration changes.
Weather across the region turns frigid with readings of 21 below in LaCrosse and 24 below in Richland Center. Temperatures fall to 14 below at 9 am and remain below zero by noon. Green County roads iced and treacherous while Milwaukee reports 12 above and Eau Claire 1 above. The Times thermometer stays under zero since Monday midnight.
A state delivery brings about a dozen sacks of corn to the Beckman Garage at 1614 12th St Monroe for wildlife feeding. Ray Beckman, president of the Green County Conservation League, announced the program and asks helpers to bring their own containers to collect the corn for pheasants and other birds.
Police report seven auto accidents in Monroe, six occurring Tuesday. Incidents involve drivers LaVerne Springer George Wenger Betty Schultz Robert Weiss Walter Minder Kim Lausch John Meier Jane Schneider and others with minor to moderate damage and one traffic-violation charge. conditions included heavy snow banks and slippery streets.
