The Monroe City Council voted to buy 7.67 acres from Henry and Florence Kramer east of the city dump for 4000 dollars to expand disposal space. The move accompanies pay raises for elected officials and a higher fire inspector salary, with other budget actions and hearings noted.
Mayor Walter R. Ekum said a Planning Commission recommendation on Highway 69 through Monroe will reach the City Council this month. The panel will present a city map showing designated routes and alternate streets as concerns over traffic flow rise. A petition of more than 400 residents urged a bypass to avoid residential areas, with two candidate bypass paths under study along 7th Ave and farther west within Monroe limits.
Monroe city crews collected about 900 Christmas trees from street corners in 35 truckloads. Jack Erb, street superintendent, said gathering finished yesterday and trees will be used for the annual Burning of the Greens at 7 15 tomorrow night on the 5th Ave burning lot, with Fire Department supervision.
Kendall C. Digman of Route 3 Monroe area is named recipient by the Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors for ten years of habitat work on his 536 acre farm. He planted 10 000 trees, hedgerows, stream bank work, nest boxes and brush piles, and maintains wildlife friendly practices on his property. The award will be presented at an area SWCD meeting in February and Digman becomes a finalist for area recognition.
Monticello School District will hold an information meeting at 8 p.m. on Wednesday January 13 in the school gymnasium to review a proposed building addition. Sketches and floor plans are on display at the Bank of Monticello as the district weighs financing over 20 years with about 1.65 mill in 1963 equalized valuation.
State Department security experts recounted a diplomat who found a microphone in his home above the bed, triggering a shift to guarded conversations in his garden. Officials say embassies now have secure rooms, espionage proof, built in the United States and guarded by about 100 security officers overseas. The officers operate from Frankfurt Tokyo and Panama, making routine rounds.
Green Bay All-Pro Ray Nitschke will speak at the Jaycee Bosses Night at Monroe County Club on February 18 as Monroe’s Outstanding Senior Citizen and Outstanding Young Man for 1964 are announced. The event honors past winners and bosses, with Sundseth chairing.
Eight American Field Service students will visit Monroe for a two day program. They arrive Friday, attend high school, join hosts for dinner and a dance, stay overnight with local families, and tour a cheese factory and a dairy farm Saturday before departing noon. Ali Wagner of Germany will stay with the Lester M. Johnson home and is the visiting student from Janesville.
An overnight blaze at a satellite and missile tracking complex in Florida destroyed a $30 million facility. Seventy five military and civilian firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the fire and prevent further damage.
